Why? It's based on the apparent wide spread support for this law among Russians, and in my eyes anyone who supports this law deserves that treatment.

I've got a fresh new perspective; if we allowed patches to protest this law, would we not then has to start protesting literally everything in the entire world? And if that's the case then doesn't it make sense to never protest anything unless we've protested everything?
Also, we can't mix politics with the olympics, because this would literally be the first time that has ever happened, and would be the end of the olympics as we know it.

I'd like to know how you came about to hold this viewpoint...
Childhood trauma or some other form of PTSD?
I know it's cool on this board to hate on everything Russia, but your hatred seems to be the most vocal and deeply-rooted. It's remarkable.

Courtesy of the viewpoint, and sources, provided by our resident Russian on the ground.
Supporting this law is disgusting, I have no issue with the apparent minority of Russians who do not support it.

But you said you already knew that before Pointman.
I'm curious as to how?

Well he wasn't breaking any news that wasn't already out there, just piling it on and confirming that this isn't a case of selective reporting or otherwise skewed information.

If you don't want to answer that's fine, just say so instead of this dodge.

How exactly is that a dodge? I was well aware of this law and its popularity in Russia, the posts in this thread confirmed that as well as indicating that the support was even more wide spread. On top of that some of the links demonstrated that supposed moderates on the issue were equally as disgusting.
You go ahead and take that as a dodge, I answered your question completely. IF you have another one go ahead and ask it.

Sorry I was aware that I wasn't allowed to say what I thought. I suppose this thread should have been locked as soon as you said what you had to say.

|
I've said it before but will say it again: I am not really in favour of a patch on the official jersey. If Canada (and the other progressive first world nations) really want to send a message, it should be a boycott that not only keeps our athletes out of the olympics but also our TV broadcasts and sponsors and anything else that would provide money to go to Russia. That is the best way for our nations to apply pressure in a very public way.
Now having said that, the reason why we are discussing Russia and their human rights related laws (and not the middle east or whatever) is because Russia has stuck their neck out there and asked the world to pay attention to them. Russia wants to host the Olympics, they want the entire world to watch them and they want to share their culture as a part of hosting the Olympics.
The problem with Russia is that the Olympic message is one of peace and tolerance and all that feel-good stuff.
Quote:
The mission of Olympic Spirit is "to build a peaceful and better world in the Olympic Spirit which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play - Olympic Spirit strives to inspire and motivate the youth of the world to be the best they can be through educational and entertaining interactive challenges. Olympic Spirit seeks to instill and develop the values and ideals of Olympism in those who visit and to promote tolerance and understanding in these increasingly troubled time in which we live, to make our world a more peaceful place."
|
When the message of the Olympics is to promote tolerance and understanding and then Russia passes a law that essentially fights tolerance and crushes understanding, that is what puts Russia under the microscope.
Had Russia passed on hosting the Olympics we probably would not be paying attention so closely but we still would have noticed. It is hard not to notice when one of the "super powers" of the modern world takes a step backwards on a major social issue such as this one. Especially when the US is making such a big deal about the steps forward that they are taking on the exact same issue.
In the same line of thought, a lot of people said things like "but what about China". I believe that the point can be made that China opened their country up to the world and with that they acknowledged that steps needed to be taken to improve their human rights. Since then China has/is supposedly taking steps in the right direction and becoming more supportive of human rights. They still have a long way to go but at the very least they are going in the right direction (for now).

It's a dodge because you didn't answer my initial question in post 628.
The part in bold specifically.
If you're not comfortable stating the reasons of your xenophobia and disdain towards everything Russia before this law came out, it's OK. You really don't have to. I don't want to derail this thread much further, I just wanted to clarify why it was a dodge on your part.

Before this law came out? Umm, my posts are specifically about this law and the people who support it. Try reading a little closer and paying attention to the context next time.
