So you guys have got me really interested in this, never really been able to get myself into a structured workout routine, but yoga has always seemed like something that would help me out with what goals I do have (general fitness, flexibility and just keeping trim/toned)

How much room is required for the various workouts? All the website says is "you need some space on the ground". The TVs in my house are either somewhere with not enough lateral space or a ceiling that is just at the limit of my upwards stretched hands. Is vertical space an issue with this, or are all the exercises something where you're firmly planted on the ground?

Thanks,

How tall are you? I'm just a shade under 6'3" and I need to workout in my living room, not our "exercise room". This is because I hit the ceiling in the basement when I reach my hands up as high as I can stretch them, thus not getting the recommended stretch. In the upstairs living room I have the vertical space with a couple of inches (or more) to spare.

As far as floor space, I haven't exactly measured, but I just ordered an 85" yoga mat, so at least 85" by 30" if you're tall like me, although for broken airplane you may need a little more space than 30"

What I do is just move the coffee table up against the fireplace and couch and that gives me plenty of space on the floor and then some.

Do you have a laptop that you can move to a room with more space?

I'm 6'1" with a low ceiling basement (by modern standards, not a basement suite or anything like that). Might have to resort to the laptop - not sure how much of the time I'll be looking at the screen to begin with.

Thanks

In the beginning you will spend more time looking at the screen. As time goes and you get used to it you look at the screen less and less. Just yesterday I glanced at the TV and I noticed one of the participants catch himself from stumbling. I had never seen that before and I've done that workout at least a couple dozen times. When I do new workouts I'll look at the screen to see the new sequence or moves that hasn't been done in the previous workouts but it isn't for long. I've been contemplating finally downloading the MP3 versions and putting them on my iPod so I can watch hockey while I workout this fall/winter.

Once you know the names and positions and they don't change much you rarely watch the screen.

The first few times that you do a workout you will watch it, because Core is so different it will be that way for me.

But you tend to memorize the sequence.

I've done core so much that I don't think I even watch the screen at all. I've got into such a routine with it that last night I forgot the first exercise is 15 reps and I stopped after 10 and went into bridge and was trying to figure out why my wife was still doing the reps.

For those who have done RHC... The scissor crunches are too hard for me to do it with straight legs so I modify and the modification is essentially just like the bicycle crunches. Yet I find that even with the modification the scissor crunches are still way harder. Anybody else feel the same? I wonder what is different enough to make it like that?

I find that my legs just don't extend straight. There's numerous positions where the people have their legs straight and I just can't do that. I've always had bad knees and to straighten them completely causes pain or feels like my knee is going to pop out.

Just get as close as you can, you are still benefiting from it.

Yup there are some standing positions where my knee's don't straighten without a lot of pain. the main one believe it or not is the standing split. But its slowly getting better.

If you watch DDP his knees definitely don't straighten on everything.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for the great info. I am in! Got all the stuff the other day and I am actually really impressed with the guide. Going to make the chicken recipe tonight actually. Looking forward to giving the whole program a try, however I don't think I will be too strict with the diet side of things.

I don't follow the meal plan at all but we do eat healthy on a regular basis. I think the diet side really depends on your goals as well. I was only 185lbs to start with so weight loss wasn't a huge thing for me (180 now after 2 months).

Enjoy it and keep coming back for updates

I don't follow the diet at all either. I was diagnosed with diabetes back in November and saw a dietician who helped me to understand how to eat to help manage my disease. As a result I've been eating quite a bit better. I went from 225 to 215 just by changing my diet. Then I found DDP Yoga and from mid May until now, I've lost only 5 lbs. Nothing to sneeze at when you look at some of the transformations on ddpyoga.com.

My doctor and dietician were not overly concerned with my weight. It wasn't ideal but the both told me that if I manage my diabetes through diet, then my weight will take care of itself.

So what exactly do I do? I look at carbs. I try to eat only 8-9 servings of carbs per day, and I try to make sure that the carbs I do eat are complex carbs, not refined. Along with watching my carbs I make sure my meals are well balanced so, really, I'm watching more than my carbs, but carbs is my main focus. What it boils down to, is I'm following the Canada Food Guide.

I'm not overly strict with it because I do have times where the food available to me isn't the greatest, like going to somebody's place for a meal, bbq or birthday celebration. I do get to live a little and have some treats. I just have to be careful that I don't overindulge on those treats, which is what I was starting to do in late July and early August.

What you will hear many times in the DVDs is to "Make DDP Yoga your own". The workouts and the food guide are based on what DDP does for his health. You can do what you need to do to suit you. Keep coming back to this thread and we'll help you with tips and encouragement. I recommend to also sign up on teamddpyoga.com. There you will find more support, advice and info.

I made my own diet after consulting with some people. In a lot of ways mine is a bit more strict. I just don't go as much into the organics as he does.

As long as your not eating at McDonalds every day and being careful with what you eat you'll see results.

An old school friend of mine and current Alderman in Lethbridge ate at McDonalds everyday for a month as some experiment. I can't remember what he was trying to prove/disprove or what the results were, but he is still alive and looking healthy so McDonald's can't be all that bad, amiright?

Well, I got some extra motivation today when a co-worker told me I'd have no chance at losing weight by doing yoga. So those discs can't arrive soon enough.

I also downloaded some of the workout mp3s that came with the order, but am I correct in assuming that I need to see the exercises done first before trying it audio only?

Yes, and you want to make sure you run through the daily dozen a few times before you effectively start.

Not only is your coworker wrong. Once you get decent at it challenge him to a pushup contest using the 3 CT pushup form. He'll be crying like a sissy girl after just one.

Then stomp on his sack and kick him in the face.

Sign up on www.teamddpyoga.com. There is a beginners section where you can do the Diamond Dozen, which isn't really a workout but it is a tutorial on how to do the 13, yes 13 (DDP claims he wasn't ever good at math), 13 basic moves. Learn the moves. Own them. I think you may even have access to Energy!, the first workout. Get a head start on your DVDs.

Make him do 3 CT pushups while you do 5 CT pushups.

So, I did Strength Builder for the first time tonight. I wanted to call it "Don't try this home workout at home". It actually isn't that bad. It focuses on strengthening common problem areas like shoulders, knees and hips. Now, I knew I had lost a lot of flexibility. I knew that my left side was tighter than my right side. When you're focusing on the hips in this workout you're working on stretching entirely different part of your body that hasn't been focused on yet in DDP Yoga. I have zero flexibility on my left side, and next to zero on my right side. I cried for my mommy... not really but I was swearing at DDP, enough to wake up my oldest kid.

I'm not going to bother with this workout again until my yoga mat arrives. My feet were slipping on the carpet too much. There is another tip for the people about to begin DDP Yoga. Get a mat! I got by for over three months by just doing the workouts in my living room on a carpeted floor. Energy!, Fat Burner, and Red Hot Core are fine without the mat. Diamond Cutter I can get by but noticed a couple of times where it would really help, as you go along and do more workouts it become more apparent that you need a mat. Almost everybody I asked recommended the Manduka Black Mat Pro, so I ordered it. It was $128 on amazon.ca but has a ridiculously long life cycle, people have had the same one for 10+ years and no replacement in site.
