Hernia bump!

I think I may have a hernia, but I'm not sure if I am just a big wimp and have a abdominal muscle strain or if I'm incredibly manly like Darryl Sutter and am too stupid for my own good.

Left of belly button by about 2 inches, below by about half an inch, in that general area.

Obviously I am going to see my doctor, but until that time, help me understand what's going on here?

Here's what's got me confused: No bump as far as my wife and I can tell, doesn't hurt that much, mostly when bending at the waist or sitting for awhile. Doesn't hurt when I cough or sneeze. A little tender on that left side down to the groin area. Also, doesn't particularly hurt when I am lifting things, which I have been for the last couple of days (35 lbs box for 5 blocks, couple of 6 gallon pales...). I just seems to get more 'sore'. Only notice an increase in pain if bending at the waist for a bit.

What's going on here?

Hernias take a while to become really apparent in most cases. With mine, I knew something had gone wrong, but it took several months until there was a noticeable bump. Even then, I waited for over a year after that to have surgery.

You can get a hernia in the area you're describing. Let your doctor check it out.

In the event it is a hernia and you do need surgery, know that it's nothing to fear. Do your homework as to the different techniques available. Also, make sure your doctor is experienced and you'll be fine. It's now a full seven months after my open surgery, and I feel great. I felt that way after a few months, in fact.

That's great to hear, thanks for the reassurance.

Did you have minimal discomfort for awhile with yours until it got worse or was it generally unnoticeable?

I just have to wait until it gets so bad to need surgery, could be many years.
Yeah, I'm more concerned about being that guy that makes his hernia worse because he does something really stupid that is otherwise common sense for most people.

I stopped caber-tossing as precaution.

My hernia was down closer to my groan/left thigh. Hurt like hell the weekend I did it and was black and blue up and down my leg. After a month the pain subsided and I was able to skate and what not again. Had surgery a few months after doing it and I still have pain in and around the area. Honestly the pain is worse now than a month after initially hurting it. It has been 3 years I think since the surgery... They also cut a nerve so I have a numb area down there as well. Apparently cutting a nerve is fairly common.

I am more afraid for my tackle if it comes to surgery.

Thanks severed nerve-akanokis.

For about a year after my doctor speculated I had a hernia, it was virtually unnoticeable. After that, I began to feel discomfort after sitting or standing for longer periods of time. In the last couple months before I had surgery, I did have occasional times where I felt a fair amount of discomfort, but after sitting down for a little bit I felt okay.

Well, the area you're describing does not sound like an inguinal (groin) hernia. I assume your gear does not need to be in fear!
