It was an Alberta Sheriff. You seem them around here all the time.
I am not sure who they fit into the policing hierarchy.

Sounds like she is trying to play the victim after attempting to give the police officer a hard time. Not rolling down your window when getting pulled over? Clearly looking to instigate something.

She took offence and gave the cop an ultimatum. When she refused his request for ID and instead decided to use her phone the cop removed the phone from her.
She then agreed to get out of the car where the cop handcuffed her. She got out of control and the cop took her down to control her. As he took her down she hit her head. He then used his body to keep her down.
Moral of the story: listen to the cop and do what he tells you to do.

You know I was going to come in here and comment on how we should wait til the details come out and we're only getting one side of the story, but your post is just as hilarious in the other direction.
Like you totally mapped out each minute detail in the cops defence, from start to finish.

I think he was trying to say that it's her claim that it was a Sheriff, not questioning the actual validity of Alberta Sheriffs.

Aren't Alberta sheriffs those guys that used to be rural peace officers and then complained that they needed a better title?

Yeah, looks like they're kind of cops, but not full cops.
Quote:
Sheriffs in the Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol or known as Sheriff Integrated Traffic Unit have the power to enforce traffic-related provincial laws, including the Traffic Safety Act and liquor and gaming regulations. Traffic sheriffs can also apprehend individuals who are wanted on outstanding warrants. They also assist police officers with impaired driving investigations. Traffic sheriffs receive specialized safety training, including collision investigation and child safety seat inspection.

The integrated units focus their education and enforcement efforts on four driving activities: impaired driving, not using seatbelts, speeding and proceeding unsafely through intersections.

You are thinking "peace officers."
Sherrifs are part of the alberta solicitor general's office.

Unless of course there turns out to be some "malfunction" or something. I think that whenever you get pulled over you should have your phone recording whats going on. I'm not saying that all or even any cops are abusive but you just never know. Best to protect yourself just in case.
|
This. I don't know for certain that Sheriffs have a dashboard camera, but I cannot see that they wouldn't. Once this is looked at it should be pretty clear. The officer likely also had a microphone so that audio was caught at well. It's no good to judge until those things are seen.

No. Municipalities employ Community Peace Officers (formerly Special Constables) of which there are different levels. They are employees of the municipality but recieve their appointments through the Provincial Solicitor General who also sets out codes of conduct and some tasks/processes the CPOs need to complete/abide by. CPOs can enforce some Provincial statutes. CPOs have no jurisdiction on 1 and 2 digit highways (Highway 2, Highway 16, etc.) but can enforce on 3 digit highways (Highway 897, etc.).
Sherriffs are employees of the Province and primarily enforce traffic infractions on Provincial roadways although the can apprehend on warrants also. They too are governed through the Sol Gen's office. They also perform other functions relating to court.
The general public often confuse the two but they are not the same and never have been.

I could say the same about whatever profession you are if we're making sweeping generalizations about entire groups of people based off the actions of few.

This woman is putting in a lot of effort to avoid a speeding ticket.....anyways, I'll reserve judgement until I hear another story.
As an aside, global news calgary mentioned this woman has a restraining order against this officer. I wonder if this means that if he was to catch her speeding again, that he 'd have to call for backup to ticket her?
