I heard one of the new woah is me radio ads from the big three. According to the commercial, Canada pay 30% less then people in the states.

Listen to the wording of the ad next time it comes on.

IIRC it is using some qualifiers to define who they are comparing to. I have only heard the ad once, but as I recall it limits it to the top 3 carriers in the US.

In case you are interested, this is the full list of US carriers.

Even without knowing the actual numbers. this is obviously a case of someone spinning the numbers to benefit their side of the argument.

Yeah, I can go to T-Mobile, the fourth largest and get an S4 on a two year contract with unlimited calling and data for $70 a month. I pay $75 right now for 200 minutes and 1GB.

Those commercials are full of ####.

I've never had such disdain for these companies as I do now.

Years of outrage for charging for services like unblocking caller ID, slowly increasing the cost per MB on plans, etc. etc. and they all go deaf.

Rumors and reports of a potential move by Verizon, instantly we get full page ads and ads in the radio as well.

Sheesh.

I love how all over the US Verizon services small comunities the size of Moncton but once they come to Canada all of a sudden they will stop. Moncton is not a small comunity.

I wish the CRTC would force big companies to sell access to their spectrum at a rate they have to charge to themselves and do it in a way that they can't just over charge. They did this for long distance service when it was physical lines.

Like electricity we need to separate the supply of the conduit for the data and the services of the company. We need to get rid of the barriers to entry for small competitors.

Telus will have my sympathy when my voicemail box on my $80 a month plan is capable of holding more than 3 voicemails.

The best written response to this campaign by the big three I've read so far:
http://benklass.wordpress.com/2013/0...s-open-letter/

I have been generally neutral about the whole debate, recognizing that the incumbents have a vast territory and a limited subscriber base to compete for, as well as a right to make a profit (and as a Telus shareholder, I've been pretty happy with their growth), but this campaign is so over the top it's offensive - at this point I could care less about their woe-is-me stories. They've completely lost me as an advocate. Telus' twitter feed reads like the new releases from a communist dictatorship, telling you how good you've got it and how grateful you should be. Shameful.

As evidenced by my rant about it in the Commercials You Can't Stand thread a week or 2 ago, that commercial infuriates me. Seriously, how stupid do they think we are? It's practically insulting.

It blows my mind that they believe that this campaign is buying them positive public opinion.

They've screwed us for so long that I don't think their strategy of trying to make us feel bad for them is going to work.

This was my tweet today (can only do so much with 140 characters):

@Bell @telusmobility @RogersHelps Worried about Verizon? Maybe try actually competing with each other? That would be #fairforcanada!

I don't get why this is an argument in wireless. I could get it if they were talking fixed lines running to rural places. I suspect not a lot of people would pick a cell phone company that only worked in big cities, even if they lived in big cities.

I don't get how Robellus corporate execs are deluded enough to think this type of campaign would earn them any public sympathy given how connected people are and how sick customers are of high prices. The amount of doublespeak that's being put out by these guys is astounding.

But it really shows you how scared Robellus is of Verizon's warchest. Being much bigger, a company like Verizon can afford to cut prices and take losses for a lot longer to steal customers away from the Robellus.

On the plus side, the big 3 are being much more transparent about their rigging of the market. How often did Telus & Bell roll out the same pricing structure during the same week and then still try to make the claim of "healthy competition"?

At least that fairforcanada.ca site says "Brought to you by your Canadian Wireless Companies, Bell, Rogers and TELUS." right in the footer.

I actually agree with the big three that if Verizon wants to enter there shouldn't be preferential treatment but agree that these ads are terrible.

Just a terrible piece of advertising that comes off as whiny and untrustworthy. What the ads should be saying is that they welcome Verizon into the market but that they just want such a large foreign company to have play by the same guidelines. This passive aggressive BS is just terrible.

What preferred treatment are they getting? The ability to bid on spectrum without interference from the big 3?

Isn't that the same thing that the people bidding on the spectrum originally got?

So did the writer of that article get 3 separate paycheques or just 1 from the FairForCanada organization? Seriously, all the points raised about why Verizon could be bad for Canada, is already an issue with the current telecoms.

Raising prices? Check.
Administration fees? Check.
Poor customer service ratings? Check, check and check.
