Not to mention it is pretty much the best drink for pairing with Chinese dining and goes with a huge range of flavours.
Lived in Beijing between 2000 and 2003. Spent way too many nights as a pawn in the "let's see if we can outdrink the foreigner" game at various business and social events. I presume that I sampled a relatively broad range of baijiu. The best ones were drinkable, the worst ones were, I have no doubt, heavily diluted with some sort of industrial waste. I suspect that alcohol content ranged from 50% to 80%. At the end of the day, that stuff is poison.

Also, as a general observation, there are a lot of picky eaters on this thread who are really missing out.

No doubt that even the best stuff is going to leave you feeling rough the next day when knocking it back straight by the glass or shot after shot, but what won't at 55%-80%. The machismo drinking habit that accompanies it in business leaves much to be desired, but that's not a criticism of the drink. The fact it's even possible to palate it in that way is a credit to baijiu. I'd rather knock a $300 bottle of baijiu back that way than a $300 whisky.

A lot of people have it with meat called ćevapi or ćevapčići, which can be minced pork, lamb or beef (often a mixture of all), unless you are in Bosnia where pork is used less.

Maybe you had some bad stuff here in North America.

It can be good, or god damn terrible, trouble is you have no way of knowing till you drink it.

I was dating a Serbian guy in University and I went to his house in Toronto for dinner and his mother made some stuff that was fairly disgusting, one of the things being what they called kajmak, (I think?) which was some kind of fermented milk in minced meat. Yuck.
It's really not all that baffling. Most foods that have a strong taste are pretty polarizing. People generally love or hate them. Cilantro definitely falls into tht category. I personally don't like it, but I understand those who do. Other foods I think that fall into this area are pickles, celery, cheese (especially stronger cheeses), bitter melon (which for me falls into the gross category!). The list could go on and on.

Celery has a polarizing taste? It tastes like nothing.

To you. To someone like me it's definitely got an unpleasant taste. Celery is the type of food I spit out cause it is horrible.

Well, there's a possibility that liking or hating cilantro may not be by choice.

In this new research the team focused on aldehydes, the chemicals in cilantro that give it its unique smell and taste. The genetic link the team found was part of a group of olfactory receptor genes which are quite naturally, responsible for helping to discriminate between different things that we smell; one such gene in particular, OR6A2, appears to be highly sensitive to the types of aldehydes found in cilantro. But, the thing is, not everyone has this gene, or copies of it. They say that of those studied, only half have two copies of the gene and of those 15% report not liking cilantro, in contrast to 11% of people who have no copies of the gene reporting a distaste for it.

Well, maybe if you eat too close to the root? Celery root is quite bitter and strong. Kind of like carrot tops taste quite different than the rest of it.
