If any place should be getting the 'absolutely must go there when I get to Canada' treatment it should be Swiss Chalet. Those guys have me hooked even 10 years later.

This.
Coffee in the Middle East is awesome. I remember my parents almost crying at how bad the coffee is in Canada when we moved here over 20 years ago. It has, however, gotten much better though.

Is it wrong that I think Chalet Sauce is horrible?

There was a Tim's down here in Deerfield Beach but it closed years ago. It was more crowded than the DD down the block, and people freaked out when it closed. I don't really remember going there There's a photo of it on FB in the " I grew Up in SoFlorida in 60's70's80's" page but it doesn't look at all the way I remember it, so I'm not even sure it's the correct photo. Now there's a SuperTarget there.

Maybe its a perfect storm of convention centre traffic and copious amounts of coffee consumption? I've never been to NYC for conventions—too expensive for us academic types.

I will say that it is not the chicken I remember from my youth, but man, somehow they still have me hooked.

I remember Swiss Chalet being much better during my childhood (15-20 years ago). Last time I went, it was undercooked and flavourless. That experience, though, was in Edmonton, which might explain a lot.

Nope I'm with you on that one.
As for Tim's - since I switched to drinking coffee black I can't stand the stuff. McDonald's has much better coffee IMO.
The food at Tim's is almost inedible. I do like their ice caps, but that is about it.

I've found the same thing, it's not as good as I remember it being as a child.
Although St. Hubert in Quebec and Eastern Ontario is a better version of Swiss Chalet.

I genuinely love the taste of a Regular at Tims. If it's 30 degrees out, I'll still probably get the regular over an ice cap, even if it's decaf. Perfect mix of bitterness and sweetness. Once again though, anything besides that combination and I won't even drink it for free. I think a double double is the most disgusting thing in the world.

Aren't you the guy though, that went to NYC and went to Papa John's and Sbarro?

Not to derail a fine conversation but Gruman's Deli makes a variety of fantastic sandwiches. Might be an extra 5 minutes out of the way but the increase in quality is WAY worth it.

Hence, the need for the Chalet sauce. That is some special sauce.
Just to reinforce the Tim's phenomenon in Canada, I just came from another exciting visit with the in-laws in Winnipeg and, amusingly, the morning traffic reports include how busy the Tim's drive through is.
The news reported the drive thru line overflowed onto Portage and caused a 10 car backup so avoid the right lane or find another Tim's.

I see the backups in this city at various Tim's drive through's. Is it a ticketable offense to be stopped on a road in line for a drivethrough? It should be.

A lot of Tim Horton's give police free coffee and donuts, so they are probably covered.

their panninis are making me laugh right now - in what way can that even be called a pannini beyond its being grilled???
Timmies reminds me of a soup kitchen every time I go there; the people watching is what stops me hating it! At our nearest (in olds 30km away) I have never seen so many old boys in cowboy hats and kids with crash helmets all thrown in together!!
