The Flames said they were ok with taking the risk of trading down in the draft because if Jankowski was taken they said they had another player who would be available around there that they would be fine with taking.

That player was Sieloff, they would have drafted him with the first pick if Jank was gone. They just lucked out and got both.

They are obviously really high on him so I think he will fight with Breen, Smith, Cundari, Butler, Russell and maybe even Wotherspoon for 6/7 dman on the big club.

Gio, Wideman, Brodie, O'Brien and I think Russell will surely be in the top 6. I wouldnt be agianst keeping 8 dman like last year and rotate out the 6th dman when they struggle.

Yeah, even Denis Gauthier was a point per game Junior player as a 19 year old. Seiloff is far off from accomplishing everything he can in junior. Which is why you can pretty much pencil him in as returning there next year. Having a year of getting top minutes and making the world junior team will not be bad for him in the least.

Pat Sieloff was drafted out of the USHL and because of this is actually eligible to play in the AHL this coming season. I wonder if that is a possibility that the Flames brass is heavily considering? You would have to think so.

An example of this would be JT Miller. He was drafted out of the USHL, played a year in the OHL, and then went straight into the Connecticut lineup as a 19 year old.

Miller and Sieloff were born 14 months apart, with miller being a march birthday and Sieloff being in may. Because it's not one of those birthday issues, Sieloff should be able to be in the AHL if the Flames want him to.

Jeremy Morin played in the AHL as a 19-year-old under the same rule:

If a European or American player enters the CHL after being drafted by an NHL team, he is treated as a non-CHL player for purposes of AHL eligibility. Basically, the CHL poached him from his home country's league, so it's fair play for the AHL to poach him from the CHL.

(Answer to Flamette: It isn't a USHL loophole particularly — it applies to all players who were not drafted from the CHL.)

However, I'm not sold that it would be a good idea for the Flames to put Sieloff in Abbotsford this season. They could legally do it, but it would burn a year of Sieloff's ELC.

If so I think there is definitely room for him on the Flames or the Heat. If he doesn't make one of the pro clubs I think we would have to sign a couple more D to cover the Heat.

Actually there is (though it isn't a USHL loophole).

The blog states clearly that if a player isn't drafted out of the CHL, the rule (requiring them to play in the CHL) doesn't apply.

Sieloff was drafted out of the USHL (not the CHL) and thus the CHL rule doesn't apply to him and he would be able to play in Abby this year.

That's pretty shoddy reasoning. His confidence didn't seem hurt at all and despite the injury (injuries happen) everyone has raved about his play last year.
