The league is going to take away their first this season due to the Kovalchuk contract fiasco. Lou came out and said he didn't think anything was wrong and strongly disagreed with the decision. Since they have put off giving up the 1st rounder the last two seasons, it has to be next offseason.
If ( and this is only speculation) they trade Jagr away and somehow get a first back at the deadline, they will have recouped a first. Lou sticks it to the man.

After watching the last two playoffs I don't know any team that would be stupid enough to trade a 1st for him.

I think that NJ can contend for a playoff spot..
Elias Zajac Clowe
Ryder Henrique Jagr
Josefson Olesz Zubrus
Bernier Carter Gionta
Volchenkov Zidlicky
Larsson Greene
Salvador Fayne
Harold
Broduer
Schneider
Their defense and goaltending is still great, if Henrique can have a bounce back year they still have 2 solid lines of offensive potential.

$4 million is decent for a guy that will likely put up 50 points. Also nice in that the Devils can do what the Stars did and flip him at the deadline for a 1st or 2nd round pick. It's like purchasing a draft pick in a way and the Devils will need one in the upcoming draft to make up for the one they will lose in the Kovalchuk deal.

Can a Jagr trade still demand a 1st rounder in return? I guess it depends on how he does this season, but age appears to be finally catching up to him. I don't know if I want a 42 year for a long playoff drive after a 82 game schedule.

The McGratton salute is about a billion times better than Jagr's limped ass one. Worst celebration in pro-sports.

I know the details, I guess I just meant why would Bettman be butt hurt over the Devils doing this?
Regardless of what they do with Jagr at the deadline, the Devils will still be one 1st round pick short of where they'd like to be.

Which really hurts since they only drafted 4 players this year and they usually have pretty good luck of getting their 1st rounders onto their roster.

Honestly, this is the kind of deal I wish the Flames would make. The kids can learn from a legend, then you move him at the deadline for assets.

Contenders don't have much cap room and Jagr wants to get paid. By signing with a crap team both Jagr and the contenders win.

What are you talking about? Guy was a monster in playoffs this year! Didn't put the puck in the net but everything else, he was pure gold.

It was awesome watching him in the OT games.
When everybody else slowed down to Jagr's speed he would start to dominate. The skill, hockey sense, and strength is still there, it is just his footspeed that is lacking now.

Understandable, sure, but to call someone stupid to fetch a 1st rounder for him is just stupid.

That division is such a crapshoot...Pit is really the only lock.
Philly and Carolina have a lot of talent but underachieve (perhaps due to goalie injuries/issues)...NYR and WAS look like they could follow suit at anytime, and NYI/Columbus have only had hot runs in a shortened season...
NJD will be starting a capable goalie every night, and there are a lot of back to back games this year...I like their chances.
Wouldn't be surprised if 5 teams make playoffs from the "atlantic" - Bos, Det, Mtl, Ott, TB/Tor.
I would also find it hilarious if the 'Metropolitan' Division teams that make the playoffs are Pit, Carolina and Columbus/NJD!

I think they have too many question marks in their top six. Two thirds of their top line have been 40 point guys the last two seasons.
Henrique was playing between Parise and Kovalchuk when he put up his 50 point season.....
I don't think Jagr maintains last season's pace through 82 games.
Their goaltending is great. Their defence is okay but they don't have much offensive punch to help the top six.
I think they miss again.
