Why are people shocked to see an eight year term? No way he signs for 4 or 6 years unless you're ready to pay him 10 million a year especially after the team traded away their 21 year old future franchise center. If he gets injured then oh well, put him on LTIR and insurance will pay him and you get the cap space back.

Centres know what their worth these days and their going to get max term and a high cap hit whether its with their team or in free agency.

Don't disagree with your post, just questioning whether insurance would cover the contract. I know from previous reading about previous long term contracts (and not just the super long ones), insurers have a limit to how long of a contract they'll insure. For some reason, I want to say 6 years.

Regardless, if ownership doesn't care, then I would be spending like that too (and shuffling players onto LTIR if they get hurt).

Too expensive. Yes hes a great 2 way player but for 6.5MM you need to be a PPG player IMO. Bergeron is a #2 high end center.

Looks like its 7 years but I wonder how willing insurers would be to pay out for seven years to a guy like Bergeron who's had 4 concussions already. I remember reading that insurance had to pay Crosby 9 million when he was out and at that time people were saying insurance companies might pull coverage for players with concussion histories.

I assume it comes off the cap hit once he is placed on LTIR closer to the start of the season. Is there a date or deadline for teams to be cap compliant? Will the Bruins have to shuffle people off the roster to accommodate Savard's salary because of this? Or can they keep them on the roster until LTIR kicks in?

Also, does anyone know enough about the specifics about why you would keep a player on LTIR instead of them retiring? My guess is that there is insurance ramifications to a player who is retired, and I guess that if they retire it would reduce or eliminate any insurance benefits they are being paid.

Bergeron is a fantastic player, has heart, and is clutch in big games. The only thing concerning about this contract is the term, considering Bergeron's injury history.

I thought I recall something along the lines of; insurance will only cover 5 years max of any contract.

I don't think this is a big deal. In eight years, the cap will likely be at $85-$90 million, maybe more. But this is what is now expected by players so if a GM thinks he can limit contracts to 5 or 6 years for homegrown talent, he'll only end up burning bridges.
