"This is a major link between Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail..." is it? How convenient of him to not mention that it won't even do that.

It will eventually do that. It's what is intended of the road.

It'll be years until that happens, we've got a whole lot of "eventually" with our roads, don't we. We need relief for McKnight long before the tunnel will be of any significant value.

Driving around the NE, I can see that the tunnel will have significant value on day 1. There's lots of traffic on CHB and Metis.
Oh, and Redstone, Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Saddleridge, and Jacksonport are booming, and growth will be crazy for the next 20 years in the area.
The tunnel will give McKnight some relief, though it certainly will be needed in the short term future as well.
Frankly, with the growth happening in the NE, I think that stretch of Airport Trail will be complete in the next 5 years, or less.

So Airport Trail ends at 36 St? That is of zero value to me trying to get to Taradale. I don't get it, and I foresee zero McKnight relief. CHB, sure.

At this time the NE is an absolute mess of traffic around the Metis area. I really hope this tunnel helps because all the folks jamming into one lane on Metis is madness in the morning and evenings.

You realize that you can take 36th Street after Airport Trail, right? Getting to Taradale isn't any further around using the tunnel on opening day than it will ever be.

Isn't 36th closed right now? I know it was supposed to be closed for widening/rebuilding, so I have avoided it.

I was surprised to see a new Radisson on 36th & 64th. It is kind of hidden by the ATB building so I didn't even know there was a new hotel going there. It looks like it won't be long until it is open - all the signage is in place.

36th Street is closed right now, yes. They are twinning the section between Airport Trail and Country Hills Blvd, as well as creating the connection into the tunnel. The original schedule was to have it opened about a month from now.
For that Radisson, yeah, you pretty much have to drive by it to see it. It's only 3 stories tall because its so close to the runway flight path. Right now, it's sort of in a weird spot until some of the rest of the industrial space around it redevelops. Particularly, the auto wrecker immediately north of the hotel.

So I'm late to the party as I haven't really been following this all that closely. Is the plan to still eventually have the train go through this tunnel to the airport?

Will there be perceptible difference in the parking lot that is McKnight Blvd? No. That is arguably the single biggest bottleneck in the NE, I think it's fair to be disappointed that this $300M project won't even make a dent in it.

Yes, there will be some noticable difference. The NE Communities north of McKnight will be less reliant on McKnight. Plus, traffic coming from North Central to the Sunridge Mall/PL Hospital area will have another alternative route.
There is definitely some traffic that currently takes McKnight that will start taking Airport Trail instead. Even if it's just 5% of the total, that 5% can ease the crunch on McKnight a great deal. I suspect that the percentage will be higher than 5% too. During Morning rush for example, if Mcknight is really slow, it becomes faster for Saddleridge/Martindale/Taradale residents to take Airport Trail to Deerfoot, rather than McKnight. IMO, McKnight will be much less of a bottleneck when Airport Trail goes through.

It does work, it just automatically starts downloading the correct file. This is the only way Calgary.ca links work for some reason.

No, it's local access for the south. not sure if it'll ever have public access to the northern part of YYC.
