They could have got that cap space by buying him out which is why I said they saved money and with Katz being a billionaire I think they would be fine with it.
I think it made sense for the Oilers to move him but don't think getting Larsen who is a pylon and AHL level guy and a 7th is a big difference from buying him out.
If there were no buyouts then yes it would have been a much better move to get rid of the cap hit but with buyouts it lessens the deal in my view.

my point is the Flames likely targeted both Ference and Gordon and Feaster lost out on both of them to reasonable deals. Not good.
Yes i like the Knight pick up, but on July 5th so far Feaster is not winning this day vs Edm.

It was a fine move but not anything close to brilliance.

Moving Horcoff, which was universally agreed as one the most unmovable, ridiculous contracts in the league, is nothing short of a miracle. Literally, a miracle. People everywhere must at the very least, tip their hat to MacT for pulling it off.

It wasn't close to the most unmovable contracts in the league and with buyouts moving him for nothing or buying him out when you are a rich team/rich owner like the Oilers it doesn't make much of a difference.

Who cares? The Oilers should be winning this day over the Flames. They have come out and said that their goal is now the playoffs. Calgary's is not. Big difference between what the two clubs are aiming for right now. I am not a big Feaster supporter, but I am pretty happy that he is not out there signing players that don't fit in our current rebuilding plans.

Frankly, the goal for the Flames and UFAs should be to sign nobody, except in the case where you probably can flip the player later on for a draft pick. If anything, we have too many spots taken up by veterans already. We need to have room to let guys like Horak, Reinhart, etc play.
UFA guys are at least 27, maybe not post apex, but likely not pre apex either. The best guys will be signed to crazy deals, and signing the lesser guys just takes away spots from guys who are developing, and who could potentially develop into more.

Exactly... pick-up some guys for cheap who you can then move later on. There's no need to spend big dollars on someone who's not going to be around when the team is ready to be competitive.

This is why you draft centres. So you don't have to pay bottom line guys 3M.

BRUTAL. Stempniak is only $2.5M, and a much more valuable player.

Its a last desperate roll of the dice for the Kevin Lowe regime. If these moves get them to the playoffs, then great. But if they don't and these moves don't really make the Oilers look like a sure fire playoff team, then I think that Katz finally throws in the towel with this circus and cleans house.
Even with a short term new coach and GM, if this Oilers team doesn't make it, I can see the patience ending. Like last year, this is the year that they have to make their move.
I like Ference but signing a 34 year old complimentary defensemen to a four year term isn't in my mind the greatest signing. And signing Boyd Gordon to a 3 million dollar 3 year contract isn't the best value for a face off specialist.
