So much for all those people who thought Feaster ruined relationships with the O'Reily offersheet and "screwed" Boston over with Iginla. Especially the one poster who wondered if Boston even picks up the phone if he sees the 403 area code.

I question the validity of these rumours. Fact is, we don't we have a Loui Eriksson quality player to offer. I mean, our best roster forward is Cammalleri and Loui outscores him and is twice the player defensively. Although, I suppose the deal could've included Giordano or something.

I love this trade. Seguin will be the best player over the long haul, but to get Eriksson along with a really good prospect in Morrow and 2 more prospects who have produced well in the AHL, all while clearing out $4.5 million in cap space, that's outstanding work. I didn't think Seguin would get traded after the draft day passed, but Chiarelli did really well in this trade.

The bones of the trade to me isn't what I was talking about, it's the fact they were talking.
I think there is enough smoke out there Between Seguin to the Flames that we can atleast assume Boston and Calgary were talking.

As in, they wanted to keep their inexpensive youthful players to help with a rebuild instead of trading them to Boston for Seguin.
Both points are probably part of the reasoning.

Yeah, that's what the article said but it doesn't ring true because Feaster says he's got lots of money to spend on UFAs plus Seguin is only 21. It sounds like the newspaper made up that part of the story.

Part me of wonders if that is the "official" reason they said no to the trade and the unofficial reason has something to do with the reputation Seguin has off the ice and issues with Management, a few Twitter incidents and the seemingly party lifestyle. Perhaps management looked at that and figured it might not be the best thing to bring into our younger dressing room. Far as I know, all of our young guys behave themselves quite well off the ice. Perhaps they figured he was not a fit in the dressing room or something they wanted to introduce.

Lets see if he even plays 80 games with the flames. Feaster needs to sell while his stock is high.

Boston got the better deal IMO. Eriksson is still young and is a phenomenal player. A fringe star in this league. Riley Smith is an awesome young winger. Matt Fraser is a mid-end sniper just looking for his chance to prove himself in the NHL.

If you believe he is going to be an NHL player, his stock isn't at its highest.

What could a comparable Flames package look like?
No forward that matches Eriksson, but could send a cheaper Glencross if they wanted to ask him to waive. Since that is likely a non-starter, the deal would not happen, but let's assume for the sake of this that he is the comparable.
Since Glencross makes less, taking Peverley back has an even bigger bonus for the Bruins, so the level of prospects may be able to dip slightly.
Morrow is a 1st round pick, touted as a top defensive prospect. Brodie would be giving too much here, as he has made the NHL, but there is again, no match here. Wotherspoon could fit as an NHL prospect D who stands a good chance of being a contributing NHLer.
Reilly Smith and Matt Fraser are two young forwards who have put up good AHL numbers, around 0.75 approx PPG. In terms of offensive prospects, Baertschi is above this level, but Horak, Byron, Nemisz are way below. Unproven prospects such as Granlund may not have as much appeal, but a guy like Gaudreau may have a lot of appeal.
So possible deals could have been:
Seguin and Peverley
for
Glencross, Brodie and Gaudreau (and a pick?)
OR
Glencross, Wotherspoon, Gaudreau and #22 pick.
OR
Glencross, Wotherspoon, Baertschi (and a pick?)
My guess is Peverley or Kelly had to be thrown in, which may have also made the Flames ownership balk at that offer, taking on another Matt Stajan contract vs production scenario, losing their best value forward who wants to be here and a real high potential prospect or two.
The result of this trade for the flames would give them a guy to build around, but take away the short-mid term help, leaving a window to win with Seguin before UFA that is very small.
Dealing for Seguin is perfect for a team with depth of prospects, closer to being competitive, so the Flames were never a realistic fit for this trade IMO

That's really funny. I haven't had any problems with any of the Calgary pro athletes. Flames, Stamps, Roughnecks... All of them have been decent guys. Its the "regular" Calgarians (or new imports) that are always a problem.
I remember one night where some average guy tried to pick a fight with a few of the Flames. They really just wanted to be left alone and were thrilled when the guy was asked to leave the building. I am sure that any one of them could have put this guy in his place but they showed great restraint.
It seems that common sense and courtesy exits people's heads the moment they walk into a bar but then I have to remind myself that most of them probably didn't have any to begin with.
I can't imagine what kinds of things that Seguin would be doing to have a bar loudly and publicly be happy that he won't be coming back but I am sure glad he isn't bringing that act here.

The grass is always greener in Dallas:
Eriksson 26-28-12 goals over the Last 3 seasons
Glencross 24-26-15
But Eriksson played 79-82-48 games and Glencross only 79-66-40
so in summary Eriksson 66 goals over the last 3 seasons in 209 games and Glencross 65 goals in 185 games.
and Sven/Brodie/Monahan and Gio are more important than Glencross.

Nice analysis but Horak's 81 NHL games out of a possible 130 >>>>> >.75 ppg in the AHL
Kolanos is a PPG in the AHL 101 pts in his last 100 games with the Heat

Not really, no. And while I really like Glencross, I take Eriksson over him every time.

Well, that's half the story in the comparison between Glencross and Eriksson. In the past three seasons Eriksson has also had 46-45-17 assists compared to Glencross' 19-22-11. That's 108 assists to 52. Pretty substantial difference. Eriksson is a lot better player than Glencross and leads the way where it counts most, consistency.
Frankly, we don't do well in comparison to the Dallas offer. We don't have a guy like Eriksson and we don't have a prospect like Morrow, unless we were to kick in Brodie. We might be able to match the other two prospects, but the top two players from Dallas are hard for us to meet without carving a whole in our team/system.

why would Morrow be that much of a better prospect than Cunardi?
He didn't exactly rip it up in his first AHL season and Dallas in a similar situation to Calgary they didn't call Morrow up for a look.
In Boston he is at least a year away .
Pittsburgh gave him up along with a 5th round pick for 34-year old Brendan Morrow who is rapid decline.
Pittsburgh (and Dallas) did not consider him to be worth a late 1st round pick which he was.

This is a good trade for both sides - a real hockey deal where each side is getting a valuable piece.
That being said, like it more for Dallas simply because they just added their top two centres in one deal. Eriksson is a star player but when you have the chance to trade him for a No. 1 centre who is 21 years old you do it every time.
Then there's Peverley - also highly underrated and is good in all zones.
Jim Nill is going to be one of the best GMs in the NHL.

Great deal for both sides but I love it from Dallas' perspective. Seguin is going to be a great leader and centre for that team. It's just not easy to trade for this kind of guy and they pulled it off without really blowing anything up.

I have a feeling this may wake Seguin up a little and he`ll mature fast.
