The city has to get on fixing Crowchild in that area then. That would be a mess after a Flames game.

I wouldn't mind if the arena took a cue from the transit stop and was done with lots of coppery goodness.

I think it would be fine after a game - traffic is usually light at 10PM. Its before the game that worries me.

Major traffic routes in all directions, plus a C-Train stop, plus a walking path... that site meets a lot of transportation conditions going forward on any potential project.

If the total of the project itself is indeed that price, then obviously it's not just the arena itself getting built. Really interested to see what's in store.
|
$1 billion is a lot of money. Could easily figure a football stadium in with that estimate and it does make some sense to have the Flames and Stampeders sharing business offices. Good luck getting the city to pay half though.

I just don't see how a football stadium and an arena is placed in the west end unless they pretty much abandon parking.

I would think that if it is anywhere near $1B, and if thy are looking for a large contribution from the city, that there would be other aspects to it beyond just the sports facilities.
Maybe things like casinos, shopping, hotel - whatever

They'd just about have to put them directly under the arena itself. That would add a lot to the cost — especially with the high water table in the area.
Someone here posted a mockup of a football stadium and hockey arena fitted into the GSL/Greyhound site. The buildings alone took up nearly all the space between the two branches of Bow Trail. Not much room left for parking.

Toss in the pretty big site of Renfrew Chrysler...move the Pumphouse Theatre and there's a bunch more space.

For those of us not familiar with the city of Calgary, can someone post a picture of the prospective site? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Maybe. Difficult to make that work without severely messing up the Bow Trail alignment. If you changed the course of Bow Trail westbound, you'd have to rebuild the whole Crowchild/Bow/10 Ave. interchange. Not a bad idea in itself — it would be nice to get rid of that bowl of spaghetti. But I don't see the Flames paying for it — or the city closing down Bow and Crowchild for years of construction.

I would imagine a complete rebuild of Bow Trail could be part of the project.
Hey, if they have to remove contaminated soul, and are going underground for parkades anyway, maybe they just put Bow Trail into a tunnel, even if its just the WB lanes.

Area West of Greyhound Way.
The map is outdated, the C tran runs above Pumphouse Ave.
The Bus Depotis West of Greyhound and East of 16th.
The GM car dealer is west of the Bus Depot, and Renfrew Chrysler is the building and lot NW across Bow Trail.

Well you can be sure that if this great state of the art facility King has been talking about costs near a billion dollars that it's a lot more than an arena and a casino. It's kind of a no-brainer that they would also build the football stadium next to the arena to consolidate their two biggest franchises.

Agreed with Easy Muhfahrkin' E on this one. Makes all the sense in the world to build a multi-use facility. Likely with a practice rink/facility attached as well.

Roads and related infrastructure to improve flow around the development would be easier for the City and taxpayers to swallow.

If that is indeed the site, I could see the province /city helping pay for contamination cleanup, and for infrastructure upgrades to Bow, Crowchild, and 14th. Also, minor upgrades to the Sunalta LRT station (upgraded pedestrian ramp over the CP tracks and Bow Trail).
With an arena/stadium as the centrepiece of a CRL, I think there could be some money available that way too. I don't think all of that comes anywhere close to $500 million, though.

My face is a bum!

Disappointed with the location, UNLESS it means a stadium capable of hosting soccer/concerts because of the extra space.
The whole Stampede Trail development/Stampede grounds start to look like they face a grim future if the Flames move out of the area. I would have loved a building North of the current dome, with an integrated underground SE LRT station. That could have turned into a great entertainment district, and would have the East village on it's doorstep and 17th ave as well.
The Stampede grounds and East Vic park will feel like a desolate wasteland with no arena in the neighborhood (assuming the dome gets levelled).

Not necessarily. With the Stampede expansion, the route from the new Science Centre, through the Zoo, (partially) through Inglewood and then to the Stampede Grounds is being referred to unofficially as the 'tourist corridor' in certain circles. It most certainly will be a geographical strength for the city from a tourism standpoint.
Don't be so quick to point out that it will be a wasteland. The right people are mindful of the development here.
