Not to single you out, but it ceases to amaze me how many people keep wanting to go after these old guys still whenever they come up. We need to build a contender for the Stanley Cup, not the playoffs. There's no short term fix here.
Thanks for the lecture. I've said the same thing here a few times. You build a team to win the cup, not to make the playoffs. What I'm saying is that we could go that route and Feaster seems to think it's a good idea since he went after Lecavalier. If you're going to go after and get that player than you have to go after some other high end UFAs. If you look at my opening post, I suggested going after a player who could play top 4 for a couple of years until some of our prospects are ready for that role. I suggested Ference or a couple of other middling defencemen who wouldn't put us over the top but would make our defence respectable.

Here's how I ended that post.

My biggest fear is Feaster spending money on players just because he can and not taking care of our needs.
I guess I should have said long term needs instead of needs but you get my drift.

I also guess I shouldn't have used the term optimistic in relation to going for high end UFAs to make the playoffs as I got into a little war of words but at the beginning of every season I'm optimistic in some form or another.

and yeah, you singled me out.

I think the plan with UFAs should be to fill short term holes.
The Flames need more depth in the system, so go for guys who can compete with the young kids, make it a very open camp. Since the Flames still need to ice an AHL team, there will be a few pickups, and with the lack of true impact players on the market that are worth what $$$ will be thrown around, I think the better plan is to shop for young guys.

I would be targeting Halischuk, Stalberg, Benoit Pouliot, and maybe one of Blum, Fistric, O'Byrne (two if they flip Butler's rights).
If you can tear Filpulla or Brunner away from Detroit, consider it, but I'm not sold on Bozak at $5M he is demanding.

Then look for bargains out there, or teams who get into cap trouble. I could see a deal such as Butler's rights for an overpaid D + a prospect/pick being a viable trade scenario, depending on how teams spend their $$$ on July 5.

If they wade into the RFA market and try to make a trade, target guys who are further from UFA and look for the "change of scenery" kind of player. Burmistrov, Bailey, might be two who could be had for less, but have potential to turn it around, especially if they are pressed into prominent roles

Of course...he's the vet with the most value... Sell High!! ... that's how to turn things around as quickly as possible in a rebuild, when coupled with Patience

Didn't the Oilers not qualify Theo Peckham as well?

That's what I heard yesterday anyways.

If that's the case does he hit the free agent market. He could be a decent bottom pairing guy.

Yes. Peckham will be a UFA. If he isn't good enough for the Oilers then Do.Not.Want.

Weren't Oiler fans hyping the crap out of him, bringing up Corsi ratings etc?

He's still young the Oilers rushed him.

In the UFA pool: Filppula, Ference, Mueller, Colaiacovo, Mike Ryder (who knew he was UFA!), D'Agostini, Mason Raymond( Calgarian so there's a very good chance he comes here)

In the RFA pool: Leddy, Rundblad, Wheeler, Alzner, Franson.

Very amused at Teubert not being QOed. Oilers were adamant how he was their potential top 4 prospect.

Gerbe being bought out? Wasn't aware that he sucked that bad in Buffalo.

Flames should just sit out the first part of free agency and then pick through the rest once the crazy money gets spent. There's going to some bargains to be had with the cap going down... just have to wait it out. The Flames will be able to outbid most teams for the players... just don't want to end up with ridiculous long term contracts.

If they can nab a great RFA via trade I would fully accept a longer term deal. All the UFA's should be three years or under. Unless they are really high on a UFA.

Key for the Flames is to not offer huge term for an new FAs. We don't want to handcuff ourselves once some of our prospects play through their entry-level/cheaper RFA deals. And we already have two expensive FAs in that mold in Hulder and Wideman. (Hudler's less of a problem)

This has got to be one of the worst UFA pools in history.

Wheeler will be signed by the Jets, no question in my mind.
