No kidding, I'll admit I havent followed this much but I have some free time tonight and decided to watch. I figured that the grilling would be a lot more intense. A few them seem like they are already sucking up to the nhl/new owners.

Are these people that are in the council chamber checked to see if they're even residents of Glendale?
What stops a resident of Scottsdale going in there and showing support for an initiative that they don't have to pay for?

Voted for Kodos

So, if this is approved, the team likely moves in 5 years, unless the team becomes profitable?

The smart thing to do would be to move the team ASAP. Check that - the smart thing to do would've been to never move a hockey team to Arizona in the first place, because anyone with more functioning brain cells than your average doorstop could've seen this coming in 1997.
So, of course, the team will stay in Glendale and bleed money for the next five years.

I really hope something happens and this does not pass. Hate that franchise.

I'm not sure a yes vote guarantees they stay. From what I understand the council is voting on a motion that includes an out clause that the purchasers have yet to agree to. I'm not sure how that effects outcome or if negociations will continue.
@mc79hockey: Hold on a second. She said it's going to pass. That doesn't mean that the Coyotes stay. The motion before council includes an out clause.”

Coyotes will stay in Phoenix until 2019 and then be in another market, a vote yes doesn't magically turn Glendale into a great hockey market. That being said, what the hell why not. A cheap road trip for a Flames game down south is nice alternative to a team in QC in a very selfish way.

I have been watching the vote and i think my eyes are starting to bleed. I have to say that I hope they vote no. The overall theme I hear from these people is "Please keep throwing money away so I can make money" I realize that is a little over simplified however this has been dragging on far too long.

Yea i dont mind them staying there for 5 more years. There weren't any arena's ready for them in Quebec or Seattle right now anyway.
Granted i was kind of hoping for Seattle . Drive down for a Flames/Seahawk weekend.

Those are things not directly contained in the lease or arena management issues, but they do relate to the long term serviceability of the debt carried for the original arena development.
Municipalities declare bankruptcy occasionally. This city deserves it for building a white elephant it couldn't afford, a good lesson for cities everywhere.
But this particular council is dealing with today, not the mistakes of of another council yesterday. The lease is part of it, but there are other, bigger picture components that will go into its decision tonight.
It looks like a deal will be struck.

Yeah, I understand all that. Was just wondering out loud on if a deal with the NHL and Coyotes is actually worse than a deal with a minor league team or no team at all. I don't know many of the specifics of the money, so I can't say, but it feels like a deal with the NHL might also cost them more in the long run.
Like I said, I understand they are trying to make the best of a bad situation, but it still feels like a bad business and community decision. Feels like they are going all or nothing, or trying to prove they can make their original bad decision succeed. (Not unlike what it feels like Bettman is doing). I dunno if this really IS making the best of a bad situation. But like I said, I'm not completely in the know on the financials, so I could be wrong. Really, it'll probably take a few years before any of us know for sure anyway.

That was shameful. Bought the snakeoil and sold out their constituents to cater to billionaires. The saddest part is I best most of those Coyotes fans there weren't even from Glendale. Easy to support subsidizing something when it's not you subsidizing it.

Which will drive business out of the city, as Glendale residents go and do their shopping in places with a lower sales tax. This will likely cancel out much or all of the business that the Coyotes bring into town, so the CoG will be spending $15 million a year for no benefit — except to the councillors' egos.
The whole deal stinks. I was rooting for hockey to succeed in Phoenix — not for it to fail and be embalmed there.

Great!! I enjoy going to games there. It's a great atmosphere, including a pre-game beer in one of the many bar and grilles adjacent to the stadium.
