How does "tolling" contracts work? There must be some sort of limit.
Can 7unogo sit out for 1,2,3, or 5 years and then say he is coming back?

Which as my point - it won't happen
If Luo wants out, Gillis is going have to make it happen
Gillis' strongest card at this point is the Olympic carrot
What an absolute ****show Gillis (and AV) has created

What happen's if Louongo retired and then came back?
Would that effect Vancouver owning his rights?
Vancouver would still be on the hook for cap hit?

I believe that team has to decide whether or not to toll the contract. In the case of Thomas the Islanders decided not to toll the contract and it expired accordingly, resulting in him being a UFA. In Luongo's case even if the Canucks don't toll the contract he will be a Canuck seemingly forever due to the long contract.

As far as I know, there is no limit. Yashin's contract was tolled after he held out for a year in mid-contract. I can't think of any case where a player has sat out longer than a year, so there wouldn't have been any official rulings.

Last year at this time I probably would have wanted the worst for ol'7uongo, but given how well he's handled this entire year publicly, I really do hope he just gets traded anywhere (except here) at this point to escape that nightmare situation but at this point there are obviously no options out there.

I don't think the Panthers are all that interested in bringing him back. They're a rebuilding team, they're probably going to go with the goaltending they have.
If they wanted him the deal would have been done.

Actually I like Luongo as a goaltender but if it has played out as it seems like it has, I do hope that for Luongo's sake he is traded to a team and a fanbase that deserves him. Frankly, if you put him on a team like the Oilers, I have no doubt that they make the playoffs, he would thrive in the team environment and frankly would be a massive asset in the dressing room as well given how professional he has been through this garbage.
I know that a bunch of Oiler fans wouldn't want him in Edmonton but their tunes would change when he started stealing games as he has done with the Canucks.

Luongo is what 34 or 35. He can't afford to sit out a season of hockey.being under contract he can't go play elsewhere. Canucks have one more kick at the cup before major changes imo. As great as it was picking up Horvat, I don't think he can step in this year to help. If he can't help then that one chip Gillis had for immediate help is now gone. If they can't bring anyone in as a ufa (which is likely since they lack cap space) then they will have taken a step back. Should be interesting to see how they fair in the new division.

Found the answer to my question in NHL bylaws section 8.
A player who files for retirement is removed from the Reserve List of his team and placed on the League's Voluntarily Retired List.
- He cannot be removed from the list for 1 calendar year without the unanimous consent of all teams.
- After 1 year he may be transferred back from the list.
- A player entered on the list:
"may not re-enter organized hockey, professional or amateur, as a player for a period of three years from the date of such entry without the written consent of the Member Club making such entry."
and
"may not re-enter organized hockey, professional or amateur, in any other capacity for a period of one year from the date of such entry without the written consent of the Member Club making such entry."
- Being placed on the list does not relinquish a teams rights to that player . He cannot return and sign with another team during the remaining term of his contract and the team would still hold his RFA rights if he were not UFA eligible. A player cannot use retirement to circumvent the free agency rules.

I think the Canucks will miss the playoffs next year. A lot of similarities between them and the Flames of 2-3 years ago.
At the start of next year, they'll have too many key players on the wrong side of 30: Sedins (33), Burrows (32), Bieksa (32), and Luongo (34).
The last 2 years, their weaknesses have been masked by playing in an awful NW division. With the new division re-allignment, they'll be exposed. They'll also be icing a worse team next year than last year. Not only will several players be on the decline, but guys like Raymond and Lappiere may not be back. The Canucks don't have the cap space to keep them.
What made the Canucks a great team in their cup run was the combination of stars at their peak and role players through their depth. They also had amazing chemistry on defence, they haven't been able to reproduce since Erhoff left.

I agree that in previous years they were a shoe for the playoffs. Not so sure any more.

actually, I see a lot of support for Luongo here. I can only speak for myself but it's Gillis and the Nucks that I have been criticising. I never used to like Luo but over the last year he has been awesome through this

Luongo will reluctantly agree to play for the Canucks this season and will most likely be below average forcing the Canucks to buy him out next off-season.

In the words of Cartman, I can see Lou saying : " Screw you guys, I'm going home".
Lou has played ball with this circus the last two years and like Enoch Root, wasn't a big fan of him. Gillies screwed this big time and now wants Lou to bail out his decision when Lou was already out the door because he was sick of it all. I say Lou sticks it to him and he should.

so he can't play for the bentley generals.........i doubt that vcr buys him out any time soon, as surely they would have taled about the scenario of him coming back and playing poorly.
if gillis truly had offers, he should ahve taken one of them and been happy to unload this long term contract and free up cap space. instead he rolled the dice, and wanted some big piece/two goalies for the playoffs.......

We're trying to serve up a plate of schadenfreude where none exists. Luongo signed a long-term deal with Vancouver, obviously at least at the time of signing the deal he wanted to finish his career in the city.
Luongo is nothing if not a professional. He played all last year even after he made a trade demand, and even played extremely well in his two showings in the playoffs I thought. Because of that, there's just not alot of spin for us 'haters.'
This situation works out with Luongo playing out the terms of his contract. There's no other option for either side.
