This guy is going to be terrible because the scouts at TSN and Central scouting who aren't good enough to find gigs on actual teams think he's ranked lower.
So then why did the scouts that did have jobs have him ranked 46 when Bob McKenzie polled them?
I understand that people want to like every pick and some reactions seem extreme but when the Flames go off the board and go against pretty much every scouting report out there that the usual posters come in and get on anyone showing disappointment with the pick.

Not only is he fast but he looks to have great balance. In a few of those highlights he had to fight for those breakaways, they weren't clean and he won the battles.
Interesting to say the least.
Agree that Craig's 4/5 scouting is bizarre... maybe he's no good skating backwards or something.
Flames have been picking character guys for the last few years now. Seems like that is one of the reasons they took this guy over the guy from Medicine Hat who apparently has a me first attitude.

Yup. Also possible the Flames had a hunch the Habs wanted Poirier so they nabbed him.

Well Craig liked him, yet only rated him a 4/5 skater, when that's supposed to be a strength of his game.
He did show some marked improvement this past year over last year. December birthday, I don't think you see too many December kids make it to Junior.
In case nobody has noticed yet that system is completely useless and basically scales down as the player rankings go down. They could have a guy in the 3rd round that skates 10x better than any first rounder and they will have him at 2/5.
With the flames drafting a kid who is big, has great hands, is crazy fast, and produces in the clutch (i.e. 6 goals and 10 points in 10 games in the playoffs)... I am not going to complain at all.
My initial reaction was 'wtf', and sure there could have been a lot safer picks, but if the Flames feel like this was the best player available then I am okay with it.
At the end of the day, if the Flames end up with 3 great prospects out of this draft, I am going to be stoked.
I don't have a problem with the Flames selecting whoever is part of their strategy and a team should stick to its' strategy but I feel like Calgary could have picked up a 2nd rounder, 3rd or 4th and moved down and still acquired him. Just doesn't seem like the strongest asset management is all.
I was impressed with the goal at 0:42 on that highlight video. Poirier was so far ahead on the breakaway, he was able to stop moving his feet 40 feet out and just stickhandle until he had the goalie beaten. The opposing D still couldn't get back in time.
I'm showing my age here, but this kid makes me think of Paul Ranheim.
