8-10 under market deals with 1 long deal I'll take 90% every time

the contract is only an issue because of Schnieder as well, if they didn't have another goalie there it wouldn't even be talked about as a bad thing, it would be an elite goalie at below market cap price

Dan Rosen ‏@drosennhl 13m I asked Mike Gillis about Luongo and where the organization stands now with him, but he gave me a no comment complete with a smile.

I guess teams like the Islanders may pick him up without having to send anything back and who knows with the Oilers? There really aren't a lot of other options. A trade is still a possibility but any dreams of the Canucks fetching a positive return may be just that but really anything is possible when you have franchises like the Islanders and wacky GM's like Holmgren employed. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Flyers get in on this.

no it's the assets Gillis wants back, the contract doesn't help but McKenzie said multiple times if he's on waivers he's picked up
Do you think, at this point, Luongo would waive his NMC and remove any control over the situation for the possibility of getting picked up on the waiver wire? There is most definitely a scenario in which Luongo will need to be bought out in order get out of town, actually a couple.

but Gillis has said even in the last little while there are teams interested so we will see, my guess/hope is that he's moved on the weekend
why would anyone claim him on waivers when, in 24 hours, he would be a UFA and could be gotten for less cap hit, less $$, and less term (as well as no future recapture penalty)?

Luongo doesn't have a NMC. He can be waived at any time.

He's been yapping about all the interest in Luongo for a year now and hasn't been able to move him either through due to greed or lack of interest.

I see. Capgeek agrees with you. It would be a very interesting time if he gets put on waivers. I hope it gets to that...

because when he gets bought out he can choose any team he wants...

which wouldn't be somewhere like Edmonton for example who are probably one of the best fits for him

it would 100% be Florida

So pick up a guy that (assumedly) doesn't want to come to your city, along with his horrible contract?

Sounds like a rock solid plan

Yeah, that horrible contract is enough to make a GM think twice. I also don't know why Vancouver, given the opportunity right now, would not eat that contract so they guarantee they don't get blind sided by the recapture penalty.

Teams will be afraid of the cap recapture aspect because Luongo will retire when he is 40.

If they acquire Luongo right now that is likely a $1.5 million dollar cap recapture for them and a $2.6 for the Canucks.

If Luongo doesn't get traded by the Canucks and stays with it is a $4.1 million cap penalty.

Smartest move long term for the Canucks is to hope for a buyout.

because by the time it happens the cap is going to be close to 80m or higher

Stan Bowman said yesterday to the Blackhawks website that they think it could get as high as 75m next season

Good god, this myth about the fabled "home town discount" as the product of some sort of managerial genius is SO overplayed. The fact is that Gillis has done nothing special; that is nothing that nearly every other general manager outside of Edmonton has not also accomplished himself.

In truth, there are two types of players from practically every team that regularly accept so-called "hometown discounts": 1) Long-term, core players and former draftees, and 2) players with local / regional ties. Gillis doesn't deserve any sort of recognition for meeting the status quo here. Any other GM could have accomplished just as much with re-signing Vancouver's core players, and with attracting local talent.

They're shopping Schneider now, a 1st and a prospect is believed to be the asking price. Edmonton is believed to be the most interested. Trading Corey still leaves them tight with the cap and buyouts would still have to happen.
