The short of it: Women lives in US for 30 years, wants to become naturalized citizen, is told she can't do it unless she joins a church because she is a conscientious objector for the right to bear arms.

Well, this is amazing, a church admits it's wrong about converting gays through religion and then apologizes and closes it's doors.

Ministry apologizes for gay 'cure' program, closes
Head of Exodus International says its worldview neither honors fellow humans nor is biblical.
Alan Chambers, president of Exodus International, apologized this week for the ministry's program aimed at "curing" gays through prayer and psychotherapy.
Exodus International, a 37-year-old Christian ministry focused on faith and homosexuality, closed its doors Thursday, one day after its president apologized for causing "undue suffering and judgment" with its programs aimed at "curing" gay people through prayer and therapy.
"Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we've ceased to be a living, breathing organism," said Alan Chambers, president of Exodus. "For quite some time we've been imprisoned in a worldview that's neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical."

Collection of stupid religion stories that annoy me.
Just to be clear, I don't come from any religion really. I follow Daoism which is really just a philosophy of how to live happily. I don't respect any irrational belief systems and especially ones as vile and wicked and divisive as the big monotheisms but I think there's a chance that I might actually have less respect for Christian moderates. The way I see it, if you're intellectually capable of embracing evolution by natural selection to explain the transition of life forms then you're intellectually capable of seeing that it completely destroys that whole "you're born a filthy sinner and responsible for that whole blood sacrifice thing in the desert 2000 years ago and therefore must pay your fine via the compulsory love and worship of someone who you don't even know existed" BS right out of the water. It's that simple.
Hey, just wanted to say I follow the tenants of a 'vile and wicked monotheism' despite the fact that more and more people (well Fotze keeps saying it) hope guys like me just start to die off. I even taught my kids to believe the same! hahahah another generation.
Well I don't hate anybody, not even Girly for holding views that a man can't come home and have a beer and must go house decoration shopping on Saturdays.
By most standards I am well educated (take with grain of salt as my beliefs may make me delusional on that point too) and I still believe all that 'BS'.
I think I should still be allowed to believe what I want, even if not popular.

You're allowed, I don't think anyone is suggesting you aren't allowed.
But in a marketplace of ideas, we're allowed to criticize unjustified or irrational belief, particularly when those beliefs are made public.
That's the rub, isn't it. Most folks are quite willing to play the "I'm allowed to believe whatever I want!" card, but don't realize that while that is true, that belief does not exempt you from the consequences of your beliefs/actions.

I think this is a common misunderstanding of the vast majority of non believers, we are not hating the people but the ideas that some religious people hold. For example most of my Christian friends fully accept gay marriage, abortion rights (strictly as possible), contraception use, sex education in school, evolution, etc...
In Iceland our humanist group is allies with a number of religious organizations in a lot of issues, fighting for the same goals.

I would fight for your right to believe whatever you wish, so would 99% of those non believers in this world. Its the fact we still have many places in the world where you can be killed for not believing, is why most of us are very sensitive to the idea of someones belief or non belief should be protected at all costs.
In the UK there is a new project called the apostasy project which we have been trying to get more money, their aim is to help people in counties where their non belief is a danger to their life or freedoms. It is heartbreaking to read some of these letters sent to this organization as I have had the privilege of reading many of these letters.
I really appreciate people that are flexible and show sincere empathy, for me its the rigid black&white religious literal-ism that deeply concerns me, and that goes for all the worlds religions.
