He wouldn't be a bad buy on a decent short term contract. He's also the kind of guy you can flip at the deadline. Depending on how the draft goes, he might be a good, short term fit in Calgary. That being said, he will most likely end up getting good offers from teams that are closer to a deep playoff run and go there. I wouldn't want to see Feaster pay this guy the moon and the stars.

Imaginary quote " Gee Jay looks like you were spot on right that I (or anyone else) was not anywhere worth the contract that my agent wanted. If TB would have listened to you I would have been out $20 or so million....... But then you had time to think about it and offered Brad R. almost as much...... so now how about $7M/year for 10 years?"

You'd be surprised how much 10s of millions of dollars can console people with hurt feelings.
Vinny already had huge payday. If Feaster offers him the right deal, he'll go for it. Even Vinny, must know that Feaster was right. The way things have worked out, he gets his massive payday too.

Short term, no issues in having the guy on the team.
Still have to imagine he ends up in Montreal in the end though.

If Tampa buys out Lecalvier that probably means theyll be picking a center this draft instead of Droiun

I imagine the Lightning exhausted every possible avenue here and at the end of the day the league simply doesn't have an appetite to pick up other teams bad contracts. If you think Gillis's face glistens on the best of days he must be mopping the sweat atoday s teams seem to be content to let these guys get bought out so they can be signed on more manageable terms. Why would any team take on Luongo's contract when they know the Canucks hands will eventually be forced?

Yup fully agree. Its not just the other teams wanting to pick up the bad contract, its that the owners of the bad contract do not want to give out the assets to make it worth while. No chance Tampa was giving up #3 overall to get rid of the contract.
The only team that might give up valuable assets to get rid of a bad contract would be the Islanders. Thats only because they have the "Willy Wonka" of owners in Charles Wang. Even then i am not sure they would give up enough to get rid of Dipetro.

If the Flames move Cammy and Tanguay, and Kipper does retire, then the Flames will need to have someone who will make money this year...Why not Vinny (IF he wants to sign here).
He won't be part of the future, but the assets that could come back in a deal from a contender at the deadline hopefully will be part of the future.

He won't sign here or anywhere else in the West. Given the way they played last year I think it is a slam dunk he signs with the Habs.

Another name that doesn't get tossed around much but I have to believe is at least being considered is Hossa. 34 years old and a +$5 million cap hit until 2021. IMO the Hawks will have no choice but to buy him out.

If Aquillini says no to the buyout, poor Lu is a Canuck for the foreseeable future

Only way Luongo leaves van is a buy out I would agree with that. I think Schneider might be forced out.

If Aquillini says no, Canucks are screwed... they are $50k below the cap with 17 players signed.

They aren't buying him out; they've already used their two compliance buyouts on Montador and Olesz today. Hossa ain't going anywhere for now.

Wow that's bold and IMO short sighted. The Hossa contract is one of the worst contracts that nobody talks about. They must feel he will be able to remain effective late into his 30's.

Not this year, IMO.
Coming off a cup win, with $7M in cap space, and with another chance to buy out players next off season, I can't see them paying Hossa to not play for them next year.

They will be using both buyouts this year. This was there only chance. Granted Hossa is still a great player that can help them for the next 4-5 years. His contract ends with 4years of $1 million salary. How does that work if he retires in those end 4 years?

How in the world did Olesz ever get a 6 year, $18,750,000 contract??

The problem with buying out Hossa is that you cannot re-sign him. He's still a very effective player and a huge part of their championship chemistry.
His cap hit stick around, but his salary starts to drop off substantially after two more years. That means he is much more easily trade to a cap floor team. In the last 4 years of his contract he has a 1mil or less salary and a 5.23 cap hit. That theoretcially saves a cap floor team 4+ mil a year, which is a huge asset to a team on a budget.
Hossa is also the kind of player that is great for leadership and even when his speed gives out, he plays such a smart game, he'll still be effective as a vet.
Plus, what does it say to the team when you reward a key player in your cup run by throwing him off the team. If I'm Chicago, I do everything in my power to keep that core together for the next few years. Serious potential for a dynasty here.

If they buy him out at that time it looks like this...

And if he retires then it looks like this...
