ya if it doesn't turn out well than in 2-3 years everyone from the management group and any players >30 are probably gone, so it's a bit of a risk by Gillis
I think it can work well though, he's a good coach and if the Sedins were involved in the process and pushed for him he will have immediate respect in the room
I thought he acquitted himself quite well on 24/7 and the stuff with the media has painted a bad light on him, I don't think the fans care if a coach doesn't like to answer stupid questions from media members they don't like in the first place

Wait...did the Canucks/Rangers just make a straight up swap trade for Vigneault/Tortorella? Hmm....

Either going to be genius or complete and utter disaster. Sedins are on their last year if they don't like the coach they may not want to come back. I just don't see that team, top to bottom, being able to play the way Tortarella coached the Rangers. Players respond or don't and if you don't you are in for a rough ride.
Talked to him Yesterday, seemed genuinely happy to be here but did acknowledge that there is a lot of work to do.

The Canucks have one year left of a rapidly closing window and if they don't do anything of note this coming year I would say that it would be the opportune time to tear the team down. In that respect hiring a new coach, particularly one like Torterella may be a good move as a short term coach. In the long term I don't think he is the right guy to have a rebuild around.

Anyone on the fence over the importance of "longevity" when hiring a coach? It used to be acknowledged that coaches have a short shelf life so GMs don't care how long it takes for a coach to get tuned out. Nowadays, coaches almost need to stay on for 5+ years in order to be considered a good coaching hire. Despite all that, there's this crazy stat where there is only one coach who has won his first Cup with the team after like 5 years on the job. Essentially, the stats suggest that a coach either wins a Cup in his first 2-3 years with the team or he won't.
As for Tortorella, he's stayed on for 5+ years in both Tampa and New York. That's not a bad length of stay for a coach.

Probably from this:
He's been generally reliable in the past.
Gillis also apparently spoke to Higgins about Tortorella since he'd played for him before when he was in New York.

Tortorella has ties to many in the Canucks. He was an assistant in Phoenix when current Canuck Assistant GM Lawrence Gilman was there. He coached, as an assistant, Kesler in the 2010 Olympics. He coached Higgins in New York. He coached the Sedins, for what its worth, in an All Star game. He coached ex-Canuck captian, Markus Naslund in New York. Plenty of folks within or close to the organization to offer feedback prior to hiring.

Totally agree with this. Disaster versus genius. Either way it's going to make some hilarious highlight reels and entertaining moments.
Kind of blown away and had to rewind the game to get the gossip

Torts to be introduced Tuesday [The Score]
theScore @theScore
The Vancouver Canucks will introduce John Tortorella as their new head coach at a press conference tomorrow: http://thesco.re/10gzVOl
Bad move all around (good move for Flames fans). How is he going to handle all the media in Vancouver? They drove Burke crazy.

I will setting up for a web show tomorrow with Gillis and Torts and we are already taking bets on whether or not Tortarella unloads on the poor girl chosen to interview him. A, she is not a reporter, marketing background and B, she is not very professional. Known more for the fluffy, goofy bits. I can just see Tortarella rolling his eyes already...
The post game pressers are going to be great!

Why are so many convinced this is a bad move. Torterella has a pretty good track record as a coach. Fair he seems to eventually ware out his effectiveness after some seasons, but most coaches do. I hardly doubt the Nucks will give a crap if the players start tuning him out 3 years from now, he's been brought in to push a veteran group with a closing window to good results. On that front, seems like a good fit.
What I do think the Nucks will find out though, is just how overated their team has been IMO from a personel perspective, and just how much of their success was a great systems coach in AV (along with good goaltending) making the sum better than the parts. That's more the issue with the Nucks IMO, but I don't really see what else they could do. They simply weren't able to keep it up with a good systems coach, so their only other option was to try someone who can potentially maximise player performance in the short term, and Torts seems like the best option available to do just that.
Also, who cares how he handles the media, completely irrelevant to how he coaches the team, especially for someone as comfortable with the side show as Torts is.

First of all, that should be a question.
Secondly, I think its a terrible move mainly because he had a gritty team with high-end skill and one of the best goaltenders in the NHL in New York and managed to coach them into the ground.
Too much grinding and demanding too much out of his players. Sure, maybe it'll work in Vancouver but I sincerely doubt it.
Hes coming from a team that went out of the playoffs because its powerplay was pathetic and they couldnt score goals and going to a team that went out of the playoffs because their powerplay was pathetic and couldnt score goals....
Problem solved.....?
