Why is it ok to judge a guy like Bylsma on recent success (virtually none) but not ok to judge Malkin on recent success (virtually none)? Not saying that you were piling on Bylsma as being a bad coach, but that was a strong sentiment on this board after the Pens' ousting.

Fact is, considering that team, EVERYONE is up for some pretty heavy scrutiny, regardless of what they did 4 years ago. The word loser is strong and harsh, sure. But xenophobic? Pretty outrageous thing to say. Cherry likes to hold highly paid superstars' feet to the fire, just like he does to Canadian golden boy Crosby.

It certainly was not an out to lunch appraisal of Malkin's play this post season.

Don't mind Cherry too much, but he is well past his prime. Time for a guy like Scotty Bowman to take over this gig.

I thought Malkin looked incredibly selfish against Boston. I know no offensive player has looked good for three rounds now but the amount of times he tried to dangle through 3 or 4 players was ridiculous. On the PP he would shot before anyone was in position for screens or rebounds. Just terrible. Zero effort outside of the Boston zone, at least Toews is working hard at both ends.

I'd still take him in a heart beat but there are others I would take before him if I were starting a team.

Some of what Cherry said is true and some of it isn't.

Malkin does dog it at times but he more than makes up for it. Malkin is always in the conversation for being the top 5 players in the NHL. I personally think he is only behind Crosby.
Malkin is so talented he reminds me of Iginla when he would loaf for a few shifts and the bam it is a goal and 2 assists.
No i'm not comparing him to Iginla i mean Malkin can breeze through most neutral zones and the D when he wants to. But if Malkin is having an off night like Iggy sometimes would they both somehow because of hockey IQ end up with points.
Malkin failed against Boston because he didn't use his line mates like he should have. He definitely created the most scoring chances but Boston had all of Pit stars in a tailspin.

Malkin at times works as hard as he wants to which kind of shows you how much greater he could possibly be. Not what i would call a loser.

Malkin is very tall. And very tall players look lazy when they're being contained and checked against. I don't know why that is. But it is. Look at any tall player, and you'll see the same thing. Malkin, being a star, is checked pretty closely, and as such, often looks lazy out there...

Cherry is senile and everyone knows he hates Europeans.

Also why is Crosby not the loser? He was frikkin' awful against Boston, awful turnovers and just did not play good. Malkin was putting a clinic out there, and if it wasn't for Rask, he would have been the hero. But because Crosby is Canadian, he gets a pass? Okey, oh, injured? Really? Really didn't stop him against Senators & Islanders.
I think Crosby being awful against Boston is an oversight as well. Wasn't good offensively by any means, but he still made a lot of good defensive plays without the puck. He was much better in this aspect than Malkin, that's why Malkin is the "loser". No effort from Malkin to forecheck or backcheck but when he gets the puck on his stick he can fly and dangle. Hardly what I call putting on a clinic.

Wrong. Zdeno never looks lazy.

Malkin will also face even more scrutiny when he ####s the bed after signing this contract.

Whats interesting about Malkin is how good he is when Crosby is out of the lineup. When Crosby is out he plays defense and leads the team. When Crosby is back in his numbers aren't as good. I would love to see a split between Malkins numbers with Crosby in and out of the lineup.

Malkin has the ability to be the most dominant player in the league and at worst, not playing defesne he is still top 10.

The thing with Cherry though is he says loser but if he instead used a word more inline with his arguement 'lazy' I don't think you would generate any contraversy

Cherry's just biased against Russian players and of course he's totally biased for a Canadian player who WAS the best before his concussions and all the injuries in the past few years. I think Crosby's career may be winding down if he gets one more concussion. You can tell the Bruins have totally worn him down, more than Malkin. It just goes to show that you can't just rely on one, let alone two players for an entire series against teams like the Bruins, Kings, and the Hawks. I still think between Malkin and Crosby, Malkin has way better skills. Crosby probably have more the passion for the game. But Cherry should've been fired by CBC a long time ago, IMHO.

Anyone who doesn't like Don Cherry doesn't know jack squat about hockey.

(In my humble opinion)

He's care a great deal about player safety and has championed things like no-touch icing forever, padded or curved stanchions for years before Pacioretty/Chara, and smaller shoulder and elbow pads when they were growing to football proportions (which was addressed a few years ago). Visors are obviously a sticking point but you can't win em all.

The game has changed a lot since his time but it's still played on ice with skates and sticks and a puck, and he certainly knows enough about the Xs and Os to comment with some authority on it. You can call me an idiot too if you want but I still find him entertaining and I'm sure he's very aware of what it takes to remain relevant and popular and even more aware of how the public sees him even as he gets up there in years. I mean, he's still on TV so he's doing something right.

Bottom line if you don't like him don't watch him. I'll take him over Healey, Weekes, and Stock any day.
Thats not setting the bar very high.

If I wanted to hear a senile man rant and rave about Russians, I would volunteer in the old folks home Esposito is stationed in.

On another note, has anyone else noticed that he has bigger man-wood for Horton, Bergeron, and Campbell than Pierre McGuire had for Dion Phaneuf and his big active stick?
