One single player doesn't make you a cup contending team though. As Pens (and Islanders) have shown this year, one (or even two) player doesn't mean you'll make it to the final.

Great teams are made with several good players that contribute. And those players generally come from the draft. MacKinnon is a talent for sure, but with how bare Flames cupboard is with top notch prospects, it's better to take advantage of this deep draft and have multiple 1st rounders that could contribute to your team down the road.

MacKinnon would be a huge piece moving forward with players like Sven and Gaudreau. Trading the 3 first rounders for the first overall seems like a fine and necessary move in order to get a superstar status player. I'd be willing to part with any player minus Sven, Gaudreau and Brodie if it means getting MacKinnon

Heh, well....I wasn't cheering for losses down the stretch, but two more would have been nice, because then we'd already have the first overall.......and we could keep #22 & #28 as well.

Thems the breaks.

What does that mean?

Yakupov may be a completely unlikeable dbag, but he's a good offensive player.

Obviously the Flames are very high on MacKinnon... and for good reason.

I say this would be a mistake for CGY... This draft keeps getting compared to 2003, and the top players in that draft aren worth 3 players from the bottom, on average.

I believe the Flames are the BEST positioned team going into this draft...why the hell would they want swap their picks for someone else's...makes no sense.

If roster players are used to improve picks, that's another issue, I'm all for that.

MacKinnon >>> Yakupov.

Yakupov wouldn't even be a top 3 pick in this year's draft. Perhaps not even top 5 - he's probably on par with Nichushkin.

So nothing to worry about. MacKinnon will be a top 10 player in the NHL for a long time. Yakupov might not even be in the NHL in 5 years from now.

yeah and would you trade 3 first rounders for him? Especially with one of them at #6. Maybe 3 1st rounders in the mid 20s.

I am not a fan of tanking but Feaster should have just bit his lip as drafts like this only come ever so often. Imagine having first over all and a couple more firsts.. I think we missed a BIG opportunity to get the franchise moving ahead in big way.

lol

I have a question.

If this proposed trade is such lopsided debacle of monumental proportions in the Avs favor....so much so that we should "OMG OMG FIRE FEASTER!!!!11!!".......why in the blue hell did the Avs turn it down?

Some of you really need to relax a bit. Bunch of arm chair know it alls. It's getting ridiculous. I bet if someone were to report that Feaster was about to take a nap there would be a dozen or so posters here freaking the 'F' out and screaming for him to be canned immediately.

So it is Jay Feaster's fault that his team outperformed down the stretch?
He traded his two best players and started a career backup goaltender to finish the season out. There is no doubt he would have preferred to select higher in the draft himself, but sometimes these things just don't work out.

There is absolutely nothing he could have done to prevent any of this from materializing.

No way. That is a top 3 pick. I think it was a smart move by Feaster to try. McKinnon this year with next years top 3 pick would have been great. They probably will also get another 1st round pick for 2014 by trading Cammi at the deadline.

MacKinnon is simply a better prospect than Yakupov.

Avs and Flames are in completely different situations. Quite frankly Avs underachieved this season. They SHOULD do better next season with the team they have right now. Add in they have a good pool of youth to work off of right now, and MacKinnon will be a great addition to push them further. Avs trend upward.

Flames however are rebuilding from not much of a foundation. Even if they pick MacKinnon, Flames will likely finish around the same spot they did this season or worse. Flames are trending downward. That's why in this context I view having three first rounders in a deep draft is better than having the first overall pick, who likely will be a franchise player.

Flames DO still have a chance of picking up a franchise player since they get their first pick at 6th, and could perhaps find a steal in the 20s. At worst, Flames should have three very serviceable players that contribute well. That will help them get more post season success than one player can.
