Nothing wrong with that necessarily. I'm glad each neighborhood offers a bit of a different vibe..and Kensington offers the arty/relaxed/coffee vibe (even though the best coffee in the city is not really there). I kind of like that you can go there and know that its going to be a relatively chill environment compared to 17th...it's not a place you go to get wasted or to be seen.

But yeah, it could use a few more good restaurants.

Right, but those are two completely separate worlds that can easily co-exist. Coffee places on 10th by the hobo hub and then later night establishments down Kensington road.

I suspect a lot of the new ground floor retail that's going into these condo in Kensington will house some hot and trendy eating and drinking options. Osteria excepted...

I'll be happy with a Taco Del Mar.

Right now I need to drive to Bridgeland for a taco.

Kensington, Food & Beverages Directory:

http://www.visitkensington.com/Defau...#searchResults

I have heard that Broken Plate has been sold and will soon become a new restaurant. The block with Lido Cafe will get redeveloped. I believe Wake Bistro is becoming a Poutine joint.

Good restaurants IMO - Brasserie, Chef's Table, Maurya, Red Ember, Wine Bar, Vero, Tandoori Hut, Sultan's Tent, Pulcinella, Muse. Flippin' Burger is a welcome addition.

Oak Tree Tavern - always seems to have entertainment nightly - bands or comedians.

Late night - Mollys seems to be the only place happening late.

I'm sure we will see more bars and restaurants going on the ground floor of all the new condos.

NooooooI have great memories of that place. Will be be kept?

I was once at a private party on Molly's patio in the summer, the police came @ 11:00 because of noise complaints.....

Hey, I'm over 40 and I live a block off 17th! Jerkstore! You don't hear me complaining about too many bars, just the ***hole motorbikes.

I'd vote for a ban on motorcycles after 9 PM between 17th Ave SW to Memorial, and 14th Street W to Macleod Trail. Besides that, the more bars/restaurants/coffee shops/retail outlets, the better. I love being able to walk around 'till late late at night and there's still people around and things happening.

Unfortunately, it's coffee sucks. 17th/Beltline is by far the best coffee scene in the city.

But yeah, I do like how each district has it's own character. Inglewood is lots of independent and unique shops, Kensington is pretty laid back but good variety, Mission is coming into its own, 17th is improving, Stephen Ave serves its function very well in the business core and so on.

On 17th Ave specifically, it serves two purposes - both as a city wide destination entertainment, food and shopping district - but also as a local commercial strip for resident's day-to-day needs. It annoys me when people say the Shoppers Drug Mart was a bad thing for the strip and takes away vibrancy. It's actually one of the biggest drivers of foot traffic at all hours of the day - it's the 21st Century General Store that's incredibly handy. I go to Shoppers more than any other establishment on 17th by a long shot. That kind of thing is needed too.

While I agree with the general sentiment that Calgary does seem to put in extra effort to stomp out anything fun, the idea that this type of thing only happens in Calgary or a few other places is pretty inaccurate. Even cities that are known for restaurants and bars have vocal and powerful lobby groups that fight tooth and nail to prevent them. Try to get yourself a liquor license in certain sections of lower Manhattan. Unless you're paying an experienced, and expensive, attorney to help you navigate the process, and are willing to jump through hoop upon hoop for months, if not years, it simply isn't going to happen.

Know what needs to die in Kensington? Julios Barrio. I can nuke a 7-11 burrito and have it actually taste better than the stuff I was served there. Hell, I'll take your usual Earls there if I have to. I'll even take a BP's for gods sake.

On that last point, I'd love something where people can at least bring their kids to - lots of options for booze and good food in Kensington. Zero for some honest, family friendly fare.

Getting back on point - wasn't the prevailing thought to try and keep the shopping aspect of 17th going, so that people would be there all hours of the day, as opposed to 6pm - close?

Very true with the Manhattan aspect, however New York has many districts whereby its known to be a night destination with nightlife and a vibrant atmosphere. There is literally no need for more in New York or any of the other cities I have even commented on. Here in Calgary, there are none. `There is no vibrant area at night, 17th itself isnt that busy at all in reality, even in the middle of summer its dead and not many people out. Point is, Calgary is definitely not known for any sembance of night life.

Perhaps its the mental aspect here, whereby alot of people get married, have kids and stay home?

Go to the rubber stamp commercial blocks in the suburbs for family friendly fare.

Julio's used to be Red Robin. It's like dumping Christina Hendricks for Carrot Top.

Julio's food is made and frozen in Edmonton, and re-heated here. My kids like going there, but I agree the food is awful.

Around here my kids can enjoy four sushi joints, two Vietnam, two noodle houses, Flippin' Burger, Thai, Chinese, Indian, la Vienna, three shwarma/donair places, lido cafe, pizza. Some of the pubs allow kids for brunch. Plenty of family spots on 16th too.
