Oilers fire Krueger. Eakins to be named HC shortly
Mactavish has called a press conference at 4pm on a Saturday
Dan Tencer @dantencer 1m Staff internally found out about this within the last half hour. It's obviously something big. Very easy to wonder if it's the coach...

Something significant is up to be calling a press conference on a Saturday. Kruger gone and hiring Vigneault possibly?

They wont hire Vigneault. That would be a smart move, so that cant be it. Plus, he wasnt an Oiler in the 80s so that rules out his eligibility.
Whats the craziest and most ######ed move possible? MacT being GM and coach? That must be it. Thats my bet.

Darren Millard tweeted about the press conference and someone tweeted him back saying this:
@darenmillard just saw him get off a plane at Edmonton airport. Coming from a meeting somewhere?

My guess is Eakins in as associate coach. It will have something to do with coaching.

Can confirm Paul Maurice hasn’t been hired by Oilers at this point.

I can't see a scenario where Eakins takes an associate position.. Is he in somewhat high demand right now?

He just had his second interview with Vancouver. I can't see him taking an associate coach position either. Lots of head coaching vacancies right now so it would make no sense for him to take this position. Only way he goes in there if Kruger is gone.

Pretty sure Eakins is in the final processes with the Canucks. Hasn't he been in for more than one interview?

He's been rumoured as a head coach candidate in a few places, so it would be odd for him to take an associate job now unless he's been told he's out of the running for the HC positions.
Could it possibly be a big trade? You'd think they'd wait until closer to the draft (or at the draft), but who knows with those guys.

He has had 2 interviews with the canucks. Gillis just yesterday said he wanted to interview 4-5 more guys. The word is that Gillis wants Stevens from LA.
Eakins has interviewed in NY and Dallas also. The problem is that i think all the places he is interviewing would rather have an experienced NHL coach.

Eakins is a better coach than Kruger can't see why he would want to go there as an associate coach. It isn't like going to the Oilers next season is going to make him a more attractive coach next off-season.
