Either way, the veteran oppposition issue won't be a problem by the time it's built.

10 km off shore? You very likely won't be able to see them, and what you would see would be completely unnoticeable.

Yeah the calgary equivalent would be downtown Calgary to almost southcentre mall. Never been to that area so I don't know the geography, but I imagine you would be hard pressed seeing a turbine from that distance.

Assuming these wind turbines are built at an economic scale, then they're probably about the same height as downtown Calgary too. If there's ever a clear day, they might be more visible than people think.

It's French land. The soldiers didn't die to protect some memorial for themselves, they died to regain freedom in the area.
Let them use that freedom as they please. Was anyone seriously expecting all WWII sites to remain untouched forever?

Even if the turbines are visible on a clear day, so what? It's not like the French government is asking to demolish memorial statues or the Juno Beach museum.
Here are a couple of photos I took on Juno Beach on June 6th, 2004 (60th anniversary of D-Day). I don't think some turbines 10km out to sea would have ruined the scene.
Spoiler for size:

I can't speak for any of the veterans obviously, however I would assume most of them would be ok with it and happy that they were able to liberate that area so that the French citizens today can make productive use out of it.

Sure I hope France will support our "dirty oil" if we are ok with their turbines.

It's weird that they are inviting Canadians to write in with their opinions, but I can't find any contact info on where I would send my opinion. And none of the articles I've read has that information either.

Very thoughtful to be considerate and ask for our thoughts as a nation, but in the end it's their land so giver heck France. Also, if they were to try and build a greasy polluting coal mine or something like that I might say "whoa now wait a second" but they aren't. They building a clean energy facility.

In the end as long as its respectful and doesn't disrupt the experience and sight lines, or the inshore assault sites then fine.

make sure all electricity that the memorials will use it's electricity. I think another cool thing would be to make a couple of the bases of the windmills look like WWII Canadian soldiers marching on to free the French from the facist German hands.

If they were talking about actually putting them on the beach then I would be opposed, (not like that matters anyway since I'm also of the conviction that we liberated that land so they can do whatever the hell they want with it) but if they're 10 Km offshore then the whole thing really is a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. Go nuts, France.

I don't get how anyone can be opposed... They're not turning it into a Nazi theme park.

I was going to say similar. Paint them red and white with a maple leaf.
I'd ask them to put a plaque or paint a different regiment shields on each one in memory too. They could also do some with the 359 names of those who fell on the beach. Just some sort of tasteful or thoughtful recognition would be enough for me.
I really don't know why this would cause so many such angst. Having been there a couple of times I'm not sure you'd see them most days due to weather and even if you do, how would it impact what happened on the beach?
Edit: here's a link to the project. The closest ones will be 10 KM from the beach and will be in a grid spaced 1 KM from the other.

Edit 2: given the location, they could do names or plaques for all Allied divisions/regiments who were involved. It's a bit far from Utah but they should be recognized too.
