No no no.

I trust you are right about the statistics but you are missing the point. Letīs look at carreer statictics then and you will still find that some players are simply better than others in shootout, hence are more skilled in that way. They get more shootout attempts? Sure, if they shown they are better than others.

No way you can argue itīs just rolling the dice when it comes to shootouts. Skill is definately involved. Individual skill, yes, but thatīs still part of hockey. Team game first obviously but individual skill plays a big part.

You commented that Datsyuk and Jokinen are "consistently top shootout players in the league". I pointed out that that statement is patently false.

Now you are moving the goalposts, but that's fine. As I noted, they are both at the top in career goals. They also have good shooting percentages no doubt, but here's the thing: for all Datsyuk's supposed shootout skill, the Red Wings as a team don't follow suit. Detroit was bottom third of the league in shootouts this year. Top third last year. Bottom third two years ago. Middle of the pack the three seasons before that, then bottom third in 2006-07.

Given shootouts reduce teams of 20 to three one-on-one battles, a single player should have a remarkable impact on the outcome. But the truth is, not only has Detroit's general overall superior skill failed to correlate to consistent shootout success, but Datsyuk being the top guy all time for shootout goals also has no correlation to team success.

Any way you slice it, skill isn't what drives shootout success.

First three paragraphs you write about how team success doesnīt correlate with shootout success.

Last sentence you talk about totally different subject, correlation between individual skill and shootout success.

Which one you want to talk about really?

One of the things that sometimes irritates me quite a bit is how often people on this board say truly ridiculous things when it comes to Europeans and/or European hockey.

I mean, is there anyone on this board who does not know that all top European players play in the NHL? It's propable that the majority of the players on the signicant teams (that have any real voice in the matter) have played MORE professional games on NHL sized ice than European sized ice. (Which are not all the same size btw.)

So why would the Euros care that much? Yes, it's nice to play on a big ice because it gives the European teams a slight advantage, but overall, NHL players like playing on NHL ice, no matter where they played their junior years.

I get that people don't watch the KHL, and I get why people know next to nothing about the SEL or the FEL or what ever.

But this? This is stuff that EVERYBODY knows who knows anything about hockey, if they take one second to think about it. Sheesh.

In addition to the suspension for the rest of the tournament, IIHF today decided to give Alex Edler an additional 3 game suspension for the knee on Staal. This means he is in risk of being left out of the Olympic squad according to Swedish GM. He calls it "practically a life time suspension".

This seems ridiculously harsh to me. It was a reckless tackle, but not an intentional one.

Good news on the E. Staal injury. Recovery time is expected to be 3 months as it was a grade 3 sprain of his MCL and he will not require surgery. It could have been a lot worse.

A decent game from Finland, but really it came down to them not having an answer to the Sedins.

Enroth was fine in goal too. The Finns had enough going on especially towards the end that on a different day they might very well have scored one or two on rebounds or screened shots, but not today it seems.

If we meet the Swiss in the bronze medal game, I'll actually be rooting for them.

It's been 60 years since Switzerland last had a medal, and ever since all medals have gone to the "big countries" of Canada, USA, Russia, Czech/Slovakia, Finland and Sweden. Getting a medal would propably be a huge deal for them.

as Haplo mentioned it's their biggest rival and it's at home

also, for most Europeans growing up this tournament is as big as the Stanley Cup is over here
