The Star didn't come up with this out of the blue, they were trying to purchase the video when Gawker/CNN forced their hand in releasing the story before they had the video in hand.

Having it out for Ford doesn't mean they have a death wish.

Gawker and The Star are both very confident that the person in the video they saw is Ford.

How many guys Ford's size can there be smoking crack in videos anyway?

They've had two weeks right, it doesn't make sense to me that a paper that makes $24 million dollars in a year wouldn't snap up the video as soon as they had it, they'd have total control of the story and they' would make a fortune. Something they need because the Star is spiraling right now.

It doesn't take too long after a reporter sees a video with Rob Ford smoking crack to scream we'll take it and write a check.

Unless the video is not as good as the reporter claims.

Rob Ford hanging out with those drug dealers isn't a crime in itself unless there's proof that an actual crime takes place in the video.

It should be enough for Ford to step down.

But until I see some proof or corroboration given the source, and the Stars track record with Ford or anything right, I'm skeptical.

The only reason the Star is reporting this is because Gawker outed the story. I'm sure they would have rather waited until they had the actual video in hand before going live with the story, but now in order to not fall behind the eight ball, they had no choice but to run what they had.

Two independent "news" organizations saw the video and they are both claiming it's authenticity.

I don't doubt the video exists. Nobody is manufacturing the story. Whether it's Ford or not is still to be determined.

What's embarrassing about being a University drop out? Unless you're stating that only people with degree's should be allowed to assume leadership roles in a democracy.

How elitist.

I'm just enthralled that these alleged Somali crack dealers want to sell the video so they can move to Calgary and find new customers start a new life.

Is it ethical for a news outlet to give $600,000 to basically known criminals? I wonder if there aren't other potential concerns other than whether they can make money off the deal.

Is it ethical? Probably not. But I don't think the Star would be above going there, however. I think cost would have been a greater concern than ethics.

While I don't think it is a requirement, successful completion of formal education should be held to a high standard when describing someone's credentials... especially when the original post indicated that another poster possessed 1/10th of the credentials of Rob Ford (which are pretty minimal from any vantage point)

That is my view, the $600,000 price tag is massive, especially considering that while they would have an exclusive on the story, that would last for all of 10 seconds until another news agency put out their own story... there really isn't any massive benefit to the Star purchasing the story for a large sum of money.

Without the direct evidence on display there is no credibility.

A reporter saying I saw it with nothing backing it up is equivalent with me saying I saw a video of you having sex with a bear and putting that story on line. Hey I saw the video, you were totally pounding that bear and the look on your face was somewhere between joy and fear.

Its the old saying, is it live or is it memorex. When your running a story with the potential to both ruin a persons career as well as his life, you'd better have strong evidence to back it up. Reporters claiming that they saw it doesn't pass the mustard test. The only way I would consider it to be close to semi credible is if the reporters that claimed to saw it were ready to put that down on a legal document.

I disagree, a person can be highly successful without a formal university education. Bill Gates for example was a drop out.

A college education doesn't necessarily mean that your a good leader or smart, it means that you studied, and finished some hypothetical scenario game play.

Disqualifying someone because they dropped out is kinda dumb.

I agree, the onus is on the Star now, not Ford, until the video is released. Star is running editorials saying Ford must answer serious questions on this.

I say the Star should man up and get the video published, or shut up. I'm no Ford fan, but leveling this kind of accusation with no proof is "mind bottling" for any professional news outfit.

I fully expect that either this video gets released and Ford resigns, or heads roll at the Star ala Dan Rather.
