Number signs on facebook..
Do they actually work? Or are people just being ###### bags?

You mean like hashtags on Twitter?
I've heard that Facebook is thinking about integrating them somehow, but I don't know if they have yet.

Sometime I like to speak to people face to face.

People are using twitter and instagram, adding the hashtags to their posts, and they have their settings to automatically transcribe the status to facebook. they are useless in facebook right now.

OK good to know that they are just being ###### bags, mystery solved.

Don't really know why you get annoyed by them. It's not like they really stand out that much. I just read over them.

As dumb as hashtags look on Facebook, they really pale in comparison to the myriad of stupid shares and status updates you occasionally see.

Hashtags usage is good for looking at what people are saying about relevant topics. I do browse some business-related hashtags regularly.
That said, people who use hashtags as some sort of hipster innuendo on their social media content is pretty ######y. Things like posting a picture of a car and putting #tinonwheels or #mydogridesinthebackseatofmyvolkswagen. Most people I know who do this seem to be marketers, designers, artists and of course social media hipsters.
Not sure why Facebook would use hashtags at this point, unless the hashtag goes to a page dedicated to that particular word/phrase, and had public access. Could be useful though. Seems to be working well for Twitter and Instagram.

I actually find that Facebook facilitates far more live social events than it prevents. Only my most anti-social real life friends are still facebook holdouts.

Facebook has done a great job lately of allowing you to personalize how you use it. It's usually just a few nut jobs who feel the need to post daily pics of their food or the daily cry for attention status update. You can remove them from your feed. The majority of these posts come from a few individuals on my list.

Thankfully my feed is generally free of that stuff, but when it pops up, I'm always happy to have screenshots for the Idiots On Facebook thread.

Hashtags can be used on FB for humorous effect, despite not having hashtag functionality there. Just because people sometimes fail to be funny when using hashtags doesn't mean that hashtags themselves can never be used well.

Actually I'm pretty sure a lot of the time hashtags show up on Facebook because people are using those apps that post to Twitter and FB at the same time. Otherwise, yeah they're just trying to up their level of douchiness.

Unless I'm mistaken, with the latest update they removed a lot of what was making Facebook more tolerable. I used to be able to keep my feed free of pictures, likes or shares from certain people, while still seeing their general comments. Now it appears to be an all or none blocking. I like my uncle and like keeping up with his family, but the dead fetus pictures and links to Jesus? Let's just say it was helpful to block them.
edit: It would appear my version of facebook is different from other people. I can't seem to find anybody who's feed looks like mine. It's as though Facebook released an annoying version and rolled it out to me only.
edit 2: yes, I have the new and "improved" design. Prettier, but less functional it seems. Hopefully that's just a beta thing.
