EDIT - I was just reading the last CP Draft Contest and apparently we should wait until after the playoffs when we know the draft order will be finalized. However, that could be cutting it very very close this year. Maybe would should try and plan it during the Finals? Just a thought.
Yeah I run it every year, I'll make the thread closer to the date of the draft.

Surprised to see Morin all the way up at 11 (Philly). He's someone I was hoping to pick up with one of our later picks. He seems to be all over the place in these rankings/mock-drafts.

Other than the experience of being in attendance at one of our last playoff games in 2009, I've never been so stoked as a Flames fan as I am for this upcoming draft. I don't know how it will all pan out, but it's exciting to be "in the conversation" finally as a team that will have a hand in picking one of the kids in the upper echelon. I'm curious as to who Feaster's "four elite" players are, and how far he's willing to go to try and snag one of them.

It finally looks like cp has run out of things to argue about in a single thread, before it became outdated. I am so so disappointed.

It's going to be a long two months

There's a small Barkov interview here:
http://futureconsiderations.ca/shoul...s-draft-dream/

Quote:
Both did an impressive job with the youngster. Barkov’s point total ranked him among the SM-liiga’s top-10 in scoring. Barkov doesn’t turn 18 until September 2nd.

While his age makes the accomplishment that much more impressive, Barkov downplayed his youth.

“I do not ever think that someone is older than me on the ice,” he said.” I try to play my own game and help my team to win games. It’s good achievement for me but its not enough.

“I have my goal in NHL.”

Where remains to be seen, but that isn’t of any concern to Barkov.

“For me it doesn’t matter which team drafts,” he said. “If someone drafts me then I try to do a lot of work, that some day I will play for the team and help to win something.”

here's my preferred scenario:

1. try to exchange our STL and PIT picks for another top 10 pick (add another late round picks, prospect or veteran forward if necessary)

2a. grab Monahan and Nurse as a potential 1st line center and no.1 defenseman combo

2b. alternatively (the more risky way) - grab Monahan and Nichuskin as a potential offensive force for the future

My perfect world:

CGY 1st round pick + PIT 1st round pick for NSH 1st round pick.

Draft Barkov.

Curtis Glencross (who might actually waive for EDM) + STL 1st round pick for EDM 1st round pick + EDM 2nd round pick.

Draft Nurse.

Why would Glencross waive to go to Edmonton? I would think that's the last place he'll want to go after the way he felt he was treated when he was UFA there. I distintly remember a lot of hate for the organization from Glennie.

Yeah, I can't recall exactly what was said, but I remember that he wasn't too happy with the way he was treated by the Oilers.

There is a lot wrong with that scenario. Aside from the fact that Glencross wouldn't go to Edmonton and the fact that Edmonton should be selecting Nurse themselves, there is also the point that Glencross should be worth a 1st by himself. He is a 20+ goal scorer on a cheap contract. That combination gives him more value than just being a throw in to upgrade a draft pick.

I also don't like the first trade either. I would happily trade up to get MacKinnon but I am not convinced that Barkov is worth Lindholm/Monahan + another 1st. I would rather draft at #6 and keep the PIT pick.

Glencross would not waive to go to Edmonton. If Edmonton is trading their 1st pick it is not for a forward, its for a NHL defencemen.

My logic was that a trade to Edmonton would allow Glencross to stay close to his ranch. I didn't consider that Glencross might have hurt feelings still from not being re-signed. That seems like a long time ago but I suppose its possible that those hurt feelings linger?

From Edmonton's perspective, Glencross would be an immediate injection of grit and scoring in their top six. Those are both needs for them. Nurse will be years away from contributing. Although, I take the point that they really need help on defense more than anything.

In any event, my proposal was more of a utopian vision (wherein Edmonton of course continues to suck and not address their real problems) than anything else.

Whatever. Screw you guys.

I don't see 2 picks in the 20-30 range moving the Flames up to the top 10 especially when both picks could be north of 25. I would love for your scenario to be true though and I am happy with 2a or 2b

There could be a scenario where somebody we have ranked top 10 is available at #15. That's around when we could package to move up IMO.

A draft scenario to chew on. Flames take Nichushkin @6 and CP explodes and crashes and melts down. Their plan is to trade up to grab Wennberg and they accomplish their objective. Aside from the fact they skipped on a center with their top six pick, does anyone see an issue with that draft scenario?

I could live with it for sure. But it's no Barkov which makes me a sad panda.

Yeah, I would definitely have an issue with that scenario. The Flames need a #1C above all else and after trading away our franchise player, an elite winger that we never could find a center to play with, I would expect Feaster to be fired the next day if he failed to address this problem in this year's draft.

That also doesn't take the "Russian player with a KHL contract" factor into consideration. The last thing the Flames need to do is gamble on whether or not Nichushkin will be the kind of Russian player that sticks to the NHL versus the kind that goes full drama queen and leaves us with nothing. Other teams might be able to take that risk but we cannot at this point in time.

Wennburg sounds like a decent prospect but we need an elite center and that is more likely to be Lindholm, Monahan or Barkov if he drops to us. What people write about Wennburg does not get me excited to draft him.

The last thing this team needs is to continue the identity of having an elite winger without an elite center to play with.

I agree with what you're saying completely except for one minor part. A Russian staying in the KHL isn't a drama queen choice, it's the rational one. Coming and trying to make it in the NHL and take a big paycut is the emotional choice.
