Wonder if Edmonton would be willing to part with their 7th? We could package a couple players and a first so we could potentially pick in both 6 and 7 slots.

They took Ryan Murphy a few years ago. I don't buy into teams hating to pick defensemen unless they are the Oilers. Goaltenders IMO are the only position where teams probably prefer not to pick in the first round and they still get picked.

They would want Gio and both picks.
If we still had JBO, i wonder if they would have traded 7th straight across?

Likely all of Monahan, Nurse, and Lindholm will be available.
I think we should prioritize in that order. Draft either the #3 North American forward or the #2 North American defender. The scouting is a lot more solid and trustworthy in the CHL.
Of the 3 Lindholm is the smallest at 6'0". Nurse is 6'4" and Monahan 6'2".
Make the safe bet. Draft a big Canadian out of the CHL.

You don't pick any of those two if you're Calgary...It would be silly to settle for these two second tier talents. You have to trade up in the draft and get the most skilled player Jonathan Drouin. This guy is a Superstar, and it would be a mistake to not trade up or at least attempt to.
You try to package a couple drafts, if not all three to get third overall as Colorado and Florida will likely not move their picks and my guess is Jones and Mackinnon will be taken top 2. Drouin may even be the best player in this draft.
His hockey sense and pure unmatched skill are his best attributes. His hands are as good as Patrick Kane's and he has the drive and work ethic that will make him an elite NHLer.

Of course you try and move up, but this is an exceptional draft. The top 4 picks will be pretty much untouchable.
We'd have to give up Baertschi + 6th overall in all likelihood, and that's just not worth it.

Just noticed thst Linholm is only 5'11" - 185 lbs. Flames need to get bigger, faster up front. Too many small young guys already. If Monahan is the best centre with size and can skate and the Flames can't better that, then, take Monahan. 6'2" vs 5'11" is a huge difference, especially going into the end boards.

TSN and EliteProspects has him 6'0" 192.
He's not small and he plays physical in a Men's league, so he must be an alright size at 18.

I drafted Lindholm in NHL13, got him in like the 4th round.
He's a career minor league 2nd line center 5 years since his draft year.
Take it for what it's worth .
i'm super excited for this draft. i can't wait for training camp 2014. Baertchi/backlund will be much more ingrained in the top 6. Gaudreau/jankowski, and maybe this year's 3 first rounders, and next year's 1st rounder(s), coming into camp, at least to get in some preseason.

Ottawa was atrocious for the entire year, Monahan was really the only thing going for the team. The 67's, from what I recall, would be clobbered 5-2, 6-3. 4-1 with Monahan factoring in on most of the teams goals for Ottawa. I think his stock would be higher if he was on a playoff calibre team.

You still get a blue chip prospect at 6 without losing an asset. Drouin will be amazing, but I don't think you'll be able to pry him away without setting yourself back.

Lindholm though I'll also be happy with Monahan.
You can make the argument that the Flames are lacking a lot of things for both directions. For me, the fact that Lindholm has a higher offensive ceiling is enough to take the slight edge.

If you read this story on Monahan you get the impression he is the Rodney Dangerfield of this draft.

I bet they would have considered it. I think it would be worth a try as MacT did say he would be willing to part with that pick.

both are going to be quality centers. I'm leaning towards Monahan.

Do you think our 6th + 24th + Horak + lesser roster player may do the trick to move up 3 spots?

For a team like Calgary, I think a player like Lindholm is the better fit. If it was Edmonton, I would say Monahan since they already have their offensive centre in RNH.
In my opinion, Monahan is more of a safe bet. He'll play in the NHL but it could be as a solid defensive third-line centre (like I project Couturier to be). I think if you're the Flames you go for the player more likely to be a #1 centre in the NHL in Lindholm even if that means his downside is that he won't be a player.
