How do you know he didn't? It's not a great big town. Probably employs a lot of people in the surrounding area. I think chances are better that he knew than that he didn't.

I don't know, and that's why I didn't question the parenting of the man in the video.

Who cares if it'a a small town? When the Hub Oil fire happened in Calgary there were thousands of people trying to get closer to watch that thing burn.

Now that i am a parent i can say that there is nothing i can recall as more upsetting than hearing your kid genuinely hurt or terrified like what that kid was on that video.

Damn that was intense. Hope the kid is ok.

Yeah and if they brought their kids, they're idiots too. Just like this guy. It's fertilizer, FFS. The same stuff that blew the hell out of Oklahoma City. It's no different than taking your kid tornado hunting. Stupid.

Want to be an idiot and put yourself in harm's way? Awesome. Be a Darwin Award nominee. But leave the kid at home or get the hell out of dodge in a situation like that.

As for it being a small town, what I meant was it's pretty likely that people within a 100 miles of West, know there's a fertilizer plant there.

CNN: confirmed Fatalities that will likely go up by the minute. Over 100 injuries.

Lol this is hilarious. I've lived 2 blocks away from a big plant for 27 years and just recently realized they make windows and doors. Why on earth would someone care enough to know what a big plant makes?

Sounds like you're a parent who was touched by the girls fears in that video but there is absolutely nothing unreasonable about what that parent did. They looked to be atleast 2 km away. Put your emotions aside, he obviously made an error in judgement which doesn't mean he's a bad parent. No parent would willingly put their child in danger.

You also probably live in a location that has more than 2,500 people living there. The West Fertilizer Company is almost certainly the biggest employer in that town, it's like towns in interior BC, everyone knows if there is a mill or mine in town because they all know 20 people that work there.

West is a small town of 2800 according to CNN. I bet that everyone there knew what kind of plant this was, just like I know everyone in Carseland is aware of the Agrium plant. So I'm sure the guy in the video knew it was dangerous, but obviously underestimated how much so. I hope the kid's ok.

Well that's also assuming the guy was from that town as well. Texas is pretty big and if that town is the equivalent of Strathmore then I could see a lot of cars passing by and obviously stopping when they see a massive fire.

In a small town, everyone would know what was in the plant. Regardless of that, if I saw any industrial complex burning, I am getting my family the hell out of dodge. You do not know what chemicals are explosive, or worse yet, poisonous. Rushing within a block or two to record it, is stupid with or without a kid in tow.

Glad we could make assumptions and tag him as a bad parent. Well done!

I get your point, but it's definitely the less likely situation, you are assuming way too much. The most logical explanation would be that they were from the town, which would mean they would know what the West Fertilizer Company was.

Also, even Strathmore is 6 times the size of West. This is a town where if you were a total introvert you would still know half the town.

I don't know, I could be wrong. Maybe his job is as an explosive barrel guard at United Aerospace Corporation. Then this makes sense.

Thanks! We try.

Anyway....

I know the circumstances are different, but with so many buildings leveled there (according to what's playing out on the news), it reminds me of the devastation in Slave Lake.

Off Topic is being turned into FoI...help us all.

I digress; what a devastating event, I hope it isn't as bad as it looks.

Nope, I'm not the one assuming anything.

If the town is only inhibited by 2800 people, wouldn't the logical explanation be that they were NOT from that town?

Almost 66 years to the day after the Texas City Disaster.

Bottom line, this can't happen. Whether it was done on purpose or just plain old negligence, someone's gonna fry for this.
