What do you think causes scratches and dents, near misses?

it's good to know that there's some helpful people here and most of the good stuff was on the first page
the whole point of creating this thread was to get advice from people and I got it. I honestly didnt know what to do. I'm glad that there were some who pointed me to contacting the police as that should've been the most obvious thing to do.
Hilarous how some of CP's resident conspiracy theorists came out and accused me of the opposite where I knew what i was doing the whole time. That motive contradicts why i created this thread...
Anyways, thanks guys. I feel a bit better now. I've talked to the cops and the insurance company and we'll see how things turns out

Quite the good sammaritan, aren't you? But don't let things like rationality and ethical decision making get in your way. You go right on ahead and ding the doors of people if you feel they park too close. I'll have your license plate number and the scratch marks on my door to prove it.
Hope you got nuts on that Dodge Ram 4x4 you're going to hit me with!

I have come out of the mall before, where I have parked square in a stall with nobody on either side. I come out, and I have some nozzle in a 1/2 ton parked a foot and a half from the drivers side of my car. I have a 2 door car, with long doors, and a very high centre console that there would be no way in a million years to climb over from the passenger side. Am I supposed to wait an hour for him to finish making his purchases at the Affliction store, and buying white Oakleys at Sunglass hut, or am I going to wedge into my car, as best I can so I am not late for work, an appointment... whatever. If I get parked in by you, because you think your parking space is more important, than me being able to leave the mall.... that's tough #### if I ding your car trying to wedge my body into mine.
There is no way in a million years it would hold up even if I did and you had a picture of my plate, unless you film the actual act. The dip poop that used to park next to me in the parkade in my building put half a dozen door dings on one of my cars, and when I tried to get insurance involved, they said "If there isn't a witness, there is nothing you can do, unless he fesses up." It would be no different in a mall. There is no proof any of the next 2, 3 or 10 cars dinged you. Door dings do not leave paint transfer. And even if they did, you can brush it off with a finger tip. You think the Calgary Police service is going to get involved if you get a door ding, get David Caruso, and his CSI team out doing DNA swabs of your car? They are going to tell you to call your insurance, or go spend $100 at dent clinic.
If you park someone in like an inconsiderate a-hole... like it sounds like you do, you deserve the door dings.

No kidding. I would be so choked if someone did this to me after an innocent mistake. Such a dick move.
Then again, I've never given nor received any door dings and am pretty anal about staying in the lines. If someone parks too close to me, I inch into my door holding it open a cm away from theirs and shake my head in annoyance. Once saw a fat dude ####ting a brick because he was literally too big to squeeze into the gap someone else left him. Not sure what he ended up doing, but that would have sucked.

Oh, c'mon. If you are parking inside of a foot and a half from someone, there is no way to 'accidentally' do that. You have to concentrate to not hit the vehicle you are that close to, there is no way you walk away not knowing it. It is a lame excuse, and a bigger dick move to park someone in. If someone sucks that bad a driving, and parking, then maybe they shouldn't be doing either.
And it isn't like I am going out and smashing my door against peoples cars, but if I am wedging into my car like a contortionist, and my door hits their car, because they gave me no room, I am not going to stay behind and leave a note because of their inconsideration. If I have to get in my car and leave, I have to leave. It was your mistake to park so close not mine.
On the other hand, if I did the same to you, and park like an a-hole, I am not going to complain if you do the same to me.

You can wedge yourself into your car without throwing your door into their car. I've had tight fits where I had to put the door up against the adjacent car but I do it gently so I don't leave a mark/dent.
Maybe the vehicle beside you circled around trying to find a spot and finally found one but the car beside him parked on the line so it was a tight fit. What's he supposed to do? Be "late for work, an appointment... whatever"?

How do you know the car you memorized the make, model, year, color and plate from a glance, is the car that did it? And not someone else? How do you know someone didn't pull in, damage you car, and take off right away knowing the mistake?

Not everyone is 5'7 120 lbs.
And I would never "throw" my door into another car. I don't exactly drive a beater, and don't want the damage on my car either. It takes very little force, especially with the edge of a car door, to leave a dent on current cars, especially imports.
What about my appointment , or work? Am I supposed to be late because I can't get in my car?

I dont know a 100% it's the guy who did it, but its more probable and that's for the police to determine after i've called them.
Secondly, I only just remember the make, colour and plate. I somehow remembered it. It's called a memory. Maybe less chinese people in your diet can improve that

No, the police wont determine sh*t all for you. This isn't murder, if you have no witness or evidence they'll tell you to call insurance. Oh, you still haven't called them either?
And the Chinese people comment? Get lost.

Many people are idiots, so I would argue that doing something like that accidentally is entirely possible.

When you report this to the insurance company you are technically filing a claim. If there is no other party to collect form then it goes against you as a collision claim and will effect your rates on renewal. You are also responsible for your deductible.
If the damage is minimul then just repair it and move on.

A few tips:
1. take the time to park evenly between the lines
2. park on the end stall if possible (1/2 the risk)
3. live in a nice area
4. loose weight
5. expect the odd ding with time, and if it happens don't sweat it

But what if you drive a BMW? Based on all the evidence that I've seen, they're physically incapable of being parked without being at a crazy angle or directly on top of one of the lines.
