He's got size but he's not what I would call a power forward. He's good, but not super dynamic.

How much better is MacKinnen compared to Monahan?
The more I read about Sean the more I like him.
Is Barkov much better then Monahan as well?

Monahan has all the tools you’d want in a centre. He is big and powerful, with ideal NHL size. His stickhandling is very good, and he protects the puck well. He is able to make plays, off the rush, in the cycle game, and get in quickly with a strong and aggressive forecheck. Monahan drives the net hard, and gets to the dirty areas, where he can use soft hands to score goals. He also has a very good wrist shot, and a quick release. His passing skills and vision make him a great playmaker, and he is able to make his linemates better.
|
So how do you define 'power forward' then?

Power forward is a style of game, not a physical stature. Think early to mid career Jarome Iginla, current Milan Lucic, prime Cam Neely.

Failing that I would really like to see us try to land a RW. Maybe someone like Mantha?

I would like to see the Flames win the draft lottery and then trade the pick and Chris Butler to Philadelphia for the 6th pick (draft Monahan) and Brayden and Luke Schenn.
My thoughts on the rankings for the centermen right now are MacKinnon, Monahan, Lindholm, Barkov. Barkov fall back because of his skating, and Monahan pulls in front of Lindholm because of his size and aggressive nature of play.

I've given up hope that the Flames will pick top-5 this year. I think they'll squeak out a couple more wins before the season's over, and end up somewhere around the 7th or 8th spot come draft day.

Yup. A power forward is a guy who uses physicallity to create offense - and has the offensive game as well. Shanahan and Lindros are a couple more examples.

Four points ahead of Florida. I don't see how it's even remotely possible for Florida to close that gap.

I watched a ton of Monahan (my brother played on the 67s for his rookie season). He could have developed a bunch in the two years since then but he's not a hitter or a guy who blasts his way to the net. More a Kesler type player without the diving/yapping/whining nonense.

The Flames have never had a pick above 6th overall -- why break tradition? We can make due with a LIndholm or a Monahan!

Its true the context of my post was that if you can trade 3 for 12 + 19 + 26, or what ever it was he had the picks at. As a rule the 3 lower first round picks have turned out better. The exceptions have been when you find a special player like Toews/Duchene at 3.
I think unless MacKinnon or Jones is available at 3, a quality scouting staff would be better off trading 3rd overall for Columbus' 3 picks. Not that I believe that offer would be on the table, and I am really hoping one of those two is available.

So basically Kesler minus everything that makes everyone hate Kesler.
On another player...
The more I hear about Bo Horvat the more I find things to like. Do folk think he'll be around when the STL pick comes about (assuming that pick is 20ish)?

Would you guys be open to trading that pick to columbus for all 3 of their 1sts?
currently 12th 15th and 23rd
I think columbus does that deal, they already have a deep prospect pool and if they believe there is an impact player available at the flames pick i think they would trade up to get him.
for the flames it makes sense too, adding 5 first rounders (currently 12th, 15th, 20th, 23rd, and 29th), would instantly transform the flames into one of the deepest prospect pools in the league.
now most times that trade is a lose from a flames perspective, but with the multitude of 1sts we would be depending on the scouting staff to make the right choices in the bottom two thirds of the draft.
would you do it? and if not how high would the flames pick have to be before you would?

No. I wouldn't even contemplate it.
You have to remember that anyone in the top 3 could turn out to be elite franchise players for their teams. Now, you would say how is that different from any other draft year. Well, top 3/4 this year are supposed to have a much higher ceiling than a top 3 in previous years. Hence the comparisons to the 2003 draft. Of course you never know who is going make it and who isn't, but I'd much rather still have a top 3 pick than trade it to Columbus for their 12th, 15th, and 20th.
I suppose there is a deeper pool of talent in the draft so the chances of getting a better player at 12 are higher. But I would still take that top 3 pick any day.

BJs, Kings, and Rangers. We are probably looking at teams that have a decent chance at making the playoffs.. I would say no because they would be higher than 12th and 15th.

The strength of this draft is that it's deep in talent however another thing that sets it apart is that the top 3 players all look to be special talents.

Does anybody think the Flames might use the Blues pick and/or Penguins pick in an attempt to trade for young players who might be available?
I could see them targeting a young right handed D-man with one of those picks as part of a package.
Guys like:
Tyler Myers (23)
Zach Bogosian (22)
Kevin Shattenkirk (24)
Jamie McBain (25) <- Not in the class of the other on the list, wouldn't need a 1st to acquire IMO
We have weak spots everywhere on the roster, but other than Wideman we don't have any other top 4 right handed shooting d-men....and not just on the roster, but really anywhere in the system. Pretty much every one of our D prospects is a left handed shot.

Bogosian and Shattenkirk are going nowhere.
Myers interests me. Sabres might be open to a change for him and the team.
Blues 1st, Butler, Byron? Lol
