They need to address this during the off-season, sign as many tough players they can. Fill the fourth line with goons who will retaliate if needed.
This it the thing that bothered me the most. The problem with this "team" is that it doesn't play like a team. They don't play like 5 player unit, and they certainly don't stick up for one another. How many times have opposing players run/slashed kipper after the whistle? And how many times has anyone stood up for him?
They really need to address this in the offseason. Really quite baffling.

No management/coaching take on it? If the Flames mgm/coach doesn't care, why should the NHL?
It's definitely fair to criticize the Flames players for not sticking up for themselves, but coaching has definitely said something about "questionable" hits on one occasion.

“I remember when they instituted the five minute [penalty] for interference. That’s a classic case,” Hartley told the Dallas Morning News after the game. “That’s one of the dirtiest hits that I’ve seen…Those hits can end careers.”
The problem is the NHL is still inconsistent in their discipline. That's the sticking point for me. Recall that Bork got 2 games for something similar, and Seabrook was still trying to play the puck.
Should be a suspension, imo. It just seems like when Calgary is on the receiving end of these type of hits, there's never any additional discipline from the league.

No it's much better having a bunch of small average skilled pansy ass smurfs instead who are easy pushovers, that is what truly represents the City of Calgary.

The instigator rule protects scumbags like Bieksa. With the game in hand he knew getting a penalty wouldn't hurt his teams chances. On top of that, he knew that the Flames wouldn't retaliate because of suspension for instigating a penalty in the last five minutes. Doesn't the coach get a suspension as well? Unless you're Wayne Gretzky.

Does anyone have any video? I didn't even see the actual hit, just saw Bieksa in the box after.
It has nothing to do with being scared or not. He could hurt someone else without expending the energy to fight. Sit and laugh about it from the safety of the penalty box.

Your point appeared to be that if there wasn't an instigator rule, Bieksa wouldn't have made the hit, because in that case he would've had to fight afterwards whereas with the rule in place he knows he won't have to. I disagree because having to fight afterwards likely would not have deterred him, he isn't averse to fighting. Not to mention, you don't really have time when you see a guy on the boards to go through an analytical thought process; "hey, if I hit that guy, I won't have to fight because it's in the last five minutes and there's an instigator".
The bigger issue is that with or without the instigator it's a dumb thing to do because it gives an opponent a better chance to tie the game (remote as it may be) and creates the possibility of a suspension thereby costing the team a much-needed defenseman in a close divisional race (if indeed it was a headshot and this isn't just Flames fans hysteria over perceived injustices commited by villainous Canucks - I didn't see the hit).
This is why we need a complete jerk or two in the lineup, I mean it seems to work for the other teams in the NHL.
I'm talking about the guy that plays slightly over the edge.
The old honor system is dead in the NHL, the instigator rule killed it and gave the idiots free range to do what they're going to do.
The whole enforcer concept is gone by the way side, if someone hurts your player intentionally its unlikely that anyone is going to pay the price except for the victim team, first of all because they'll probably be killing a penalty, second of all because of injury.
I vote that the Flames fill the bottom two lines with fast skating offensively limited pests that will completely take liberties with other teams better players.
If no one was willing to go to bat for Stajan against that idiot Bieksa, then on the next shift one of the Sedins should have taken an elbow to the face, of Edler should have had a stick blade smashed into his teeth. Loungo should have been run on the bench, Burrows or Raymond should have been hit hard after the whistle, all while the rest of the guys snap their heads back and scream and dive to the ice while clutching imagined injuries.

^^ uhh, yeah. I just wish the league would handle these things appropriately. Escalation isn't really the best answer. Bieksa has been playing to hurt people in the past month.. gotta watch out for him right now.

LOL Bieksa is known around the NHL for picking his fights, you joking?
Tom Kostopoulis knocked him out, there isn't a bigger coward in the NHL. That was also the first time in Tom's career that he won a fight according to hockeyfights.com.
Love watching this goof have his knees buckle, hopefully it's McGrattan buckling his jaw next game.

Keep Gratton add an agitator who stirs it up. About a minute in theirs a part where he pisses off the Canucks, and steals Obriens stick. Canucks have 3 agitators and Flames have zero. We need a counter attack

TK is far from a coward. He may lose his fights but he fights really tough guys to stand up for his teammates
I was at the game last year where the guy threw his flames jersey on the ice. Kostoplous was genuinely pissed at the fan. Maybe Feaster should have re-signed him.

I was just about to say that I distinctly remember Kotopolous one punching the cave man. Can't stand Bieksa, definition of punk.

I truly loved Ville when he played for us. We need that type of player. McGrattan can fight but Ville was actually versatile and at least serviceable in other roles.
