Biggest leak of all time:

"At 5pm EST Friday 22nd October 2010 WikiLeaks released the largest classified military leak in history. The 391,832 reports ('The Iraq War Logs'), document the war and occupation in Iraq, from 1st January 2004 to 31st December 2009 (except for the months of May 2004 and March 2009) as told by soldiers in the United States Army. Each is a 'SIGACT' or Significant Action in the war. They detail events as seen and heard by the US military troops on the ground in Iraq and are the first real glimpse into the secret history of the war that the United States government has been privy to throughout.

The reports detail 109,032 deaths in Iraq, comprised of 66,081 'civilians'; 23,984 'enemy' (those labeled as insurgents); 15,196 'host nation' (Iraqi government forces) and 3,771 'friendly' (coalition forces). The majority of the deaths (66,000, over 60%) of these are civilian deaths. That is 31 civilians dying every day during the six year period. For comparison, the 'Afghan War Diaries', previously released by WikiLeaks, covering the same period, detail the deaths of some 20,000 people. Iraq during the same period, was five times as lethal with equivallent population size."

I guess I'll bump this ancient thread with the recent news (hope I didn't miss a more appropriate thread):

Ecuador grants Assange asylum, Ecuador's foreign minister accuses Britain of saying they will "assault" the embassy if Assange isn't handed over

Another link

Apparently the Brits quoted from an 80s law stating they could revoke an embassy's status in a situation like this, allowing them to then be able to enter and apprehend Assange. Seems quite the precedent to set for asylum seekers, though a Geneva Convention ruling apparently states diplomatic posts are the territory of the foreign nation. What a mess this thing is.

Compromising embassy grounds, no matter how strongly you feel about the Target, is a dangerous road to go down if you're a major power like Britain. That will come back to bite you somewhere, sometime elsewhere in the world. He's not worth that price.

Wikileaks is going to register as a political party in Australia and Asange is going to run for senate. This should be interesting.

Isn't he under indictment and is considered a International fugitive?

And Australia has extradition treaties with almost every country.

The guy is quite the ego case.

How did you reach that conclusion as opposed to it being a strategic move?

These rape charges in Sweden seem like a stitch up though from what I've read. Ego maniac maybe but I'm not 100% against what he's doing.

I'm just curious to see what kind of numbers they get for votes. He, and 2 others from the party are going to run for Senate, and it sounds like they are ambitious to get people running for them in parliamentary elections eventually too.

This could end up being nothing, but if they become popular, I could see others registering Wikileaks political parties in their own countries. Whether you like him or not, he does have support all over the globe.

Whether its a stitch up or not, is irrelevant that's up to the courts to decide. There's a warrant out for his arrest with a demand for extradition. I would think that Sweden which has a extradition treaty with Australia would demand his return if he pops up his head there.

I don't know if there's laws against running for Senate if your under indictment, but I doubt that the Australian authorities would be thrilled if he ran for election.

If he's that confident that he's innocent then he should go back to Sweden and face the trial and get the case thrown out. Then return home and run for office.

I doubt that the U.S is using Sweden as some elaborate legal track to get Assauge back to the States.

Disagree. He might have a significant level of power, fame and attention on him now but I don't feel that was the primary reason or motivating factor behind his choice of work.

Just as I don't think it is anywhere close to being the reason behind his decision to run for senate now.

Don't they just want him for 'questioning'?

We'll have to agree to disagree, I don't believe that he did this for any good guy reasons.

If he did then he wouldn't have put out leaks that included peoples names that were working with the American's in Afghanistan, information on how American troops were trying to defeat IED's.

I'm fine with him putting some of the stuff out there that needed to see the light of day, but he literally leaked information that put peoples lives in jeopardy.

The guys no different then the Anonymous people, they might start with good reasoning, but then they believe their hype and become their own rockstars.

I would welcome him running and winning in the senate, would he be so willing to leak sensitive information if he's part of the government, and if he does then that's the greatest definition of treason that there is.

I think Assange is a ###### bag of biblical proportions that said I believe wikileaks did actually give the US military the option of highlighting sections that would put lives in danger and the US refused to cooperate

Bradley Manning is acquitted of the most serious charge, convicted of others.

Quote:
More than three years after U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning was arrested for giving classified secrets to WikiLeaks, a military judge acquitted the former intelligence analyst Tuesday of aiding the enemy but convicted him of espionage, theft and computer fraud charges.

The judge, Army Col. Denise Lind, deliberated for about 16 hours over three days before reaching her decision in a case that drew worldwide attention as supporters hailed Manning as a whistleblower. The U.S. government called him an anarchist computer hacker and attention-seeking traitor.

The charge of aiding the enemy was the most serious of 21 counts Manning faced and carried a potential life sentence. His sentencing hearing on the convictions begins Wednesday.

Manning's court-martial was unusual because he acknowledged giving the anti-secrecy website more than 700,000 battlefield reports and diplomatic cables, and video of a 2007 U.S. helicopter attack that killed civilians in Iraq, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver. In the footage, airmen laughed and called targets "dead #######s."

Manning pleaded guilty earlier this year to lesser offenses that could have brought him 20 years behind bars, yet the government continued to pursue the original, more serious charges.

Manning said during a pre-trial hearing in February he leaked the material to expose the U.S military's "bloodlust" and disregard for human life, and what he considered American diplomatic deceit. He said he chose information he believed would not the harm the United States and he wanted to start a debate on military and foreign policy. He did not testify at his court-martial.

Big bump.

Quote:
Julian Assange cannot be extradited to the US to face charges of espionage and of hacking government computers, a British judge has decided.

The ruling was delivered at the central criminal court by the district judge, Vanessa Baraitser.

An appeal is expected to be mounted against the ruling, which comes after weeks of hearings at the Old Bailey last year and campaigning by supporters of Assange and others who have decried US charges against the him as an attack on press freedom.
https://www.theguardian.com/media/20...sh-judge-rules

The Beeb report that it's on (mental) health grounds.
Quote:
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange cannot be extradited to the United States, a court in London has ruled.
The judge blocked the request because of concerns over Mr Assange's mental health and risk of suicide in the US.
The 49-year-old is wanted over the publication of thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011.
The US claims the leaks broke the law and endangered lives. Mr Assange has fought the extradition and says the case is politically motivated.
The US authorities have said the decision will be appealed.
District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled that while US prosecutors met the tests for Mr Assange to be extradited for trial, the US was incapable of preventing him from attempting to take his own life.
She outlined evidence of his self harm and suicidal thoughts and said: "The overall impression is of a depressed and sometimes despairing man fearful for his future."
She said: "Faced with the conditions of near total isolation without the protective factors which limited his risk at HMP Belmarsh, I am satisfied the procedures described by the US will not prevent Mr Assange from finding a way to commit suicide and for this reason I have decided extradition would be oppressive by reason of mental harm and I order his discharge."
