It is legal to hunt a Cheetah in Namibia; however the U.S., as well as some other countries, does not permit the importation of a Cheetah hunting trophy. Canada, South America, Mexico as well as most countries in Europe, such as Spain, France and Russia will permit the importation of a Cheetah trophy.
Having sat and petted these animals it disgusts me that people hunt them.

Hunters, including trophy hunters, play an essential role in conservation of animals. The amount of money they generate and land they preserve goes much farther than most environmental groups. In Alberta a large portion of the parks and rec. budget comes from hunters liscencing fees. The environmental group Ducks Unlimited was started as a group of hunters wanting to protect wetlands for ducks.
What I am getting at is hunters are not idiots, sick or godless killing machines. They have a role to play and are not deserving of the rediculous public bashing by the general public as long as they are following the laws. The hunters and poachers that are breaking the law should be prosecuted to its full extent.

Not that I would ever hunt big game in Africa, but there is another side to this. If big game hunting is conducted in a sustainable manner, allowing wealthy foreigners to kill a relatively small number of animals each year can actually increase conservation efforts as it provides a financial incentive for African countries to maintain the natural habitat of the animals in question.
Trophy hunting can play an essential role in the conservation of African wildlife, according to a growing number of biologists.
Now some experts are calling for a program to regulate Africa's sport-hunting industry to ensure its conservation benefits.
[...]
Trophy hunting has a bad reputation in the developed world, due in part to indiscriminate hunting by early European settlers, Lindsey observed.
Reckless hunting resulted in the extinction of species such as the quagga (a cousin of the zebra) and led to the massive decline of others, including the elephant and black rhinoceros.
But hunting has also been credited with facilitating the recovery of species, Lindsey's team argues in its paper.
The southern white rhinoceros grew from just 50 animals a century ago to over 11,000 wild individuals today, because hunts gave game ranchers a financial incentive to reintroduce the animal, the authors write.
Trophy hunting has also driven the reintroduction of cape mountain zebra and black wildebeest in South Africa, Lindsey said.

I don't really see anybody bashing Ducks Unlimited, or even hunters in general. But this guy has a tacky room full of beautiful animals that he spent a fortune to kill
At the very least his display is in bad taste and makes it harder for other hunters by drawing such negative attention to it.

No Mountain Gorilla = collection stupid and incomplete.
I am not a fan of game hunting for trophies because shooting the strongest of the herds only weakens the species. If you hunt, you hunt for food alone and only using sustainable animal sources...
Africa has a horrible poaching record and all efforts should be taken to preserve these animals. Many animals are killed as "cow replacement" meat, but what else can be done to feed a starving continent?

I just don't get killing for the sake of saying you killed an animal. Hunting is fine, for meat. But I can't wap my head around someone that kills an animal "because it was there".

Get rid of Robert Mugabe?

I know that hunting has led to conservation efforts etc but this trophy hunting crap is still ridiculous. You can conserve without doing that, but of course it comes down to a bunch of rich boys playing as usual.
A guy on my mail route goes to canned hunts in Africa, and once I found that out I have a hard time looking at him.
In Alberta? Anecdotal evidence but all the hunters I know (family and friends) use every usable piece of the animal they kill from steaks to sausage.
But do they hunt specifically for the meat or do they hunt for fun?
Again, I don't hunt or have a problem with people hunting but it is hypercritical to draw your own line onto what's moral and what's not when shooting an animal for fun. Sure, you eat the meat but that's not why most hunters I know hunt because. They hunt for the thrill of the kill.

I don't give a #### if you jerk off after you shoot it but use meat. This guy is no better than a poacher otherwise.

They eat the meat, what does it matter if the kill was thrilling?
