Booth and Ballard will be bought out, but the team still needs to move a goalie, and in my opinion, a defenseman (named Bieksa).

it makes me smile that Kipper's indecision helped muddy the Luongo waters and make a trade more difficult - even if just a little bit. That alone is worth a third!

Sorry for the OT...
OK, I am not trying to be a grammar cop, honest. I am just curious how an error like this happens. Are you dictating your posts into some speech recognition gizmo? It just seems like an oddball typo for a person to make.

It's buyout or trade him for nothing, other than that he'll be a Canuck for the forseable future.

ouch looking at their cap for next year, they have 14 players signed to 62 million leaving them 2 million to fill their roster. Even if they buy out Booth and Ballard they are sitting at 12 players with 10 million to spend. They would need 2 dmen and 6 forwards to fill a starting roster. It will be interesting to see how they get out of this one.

I don't.
He's the one that agreed to and signed the sucky $64M, 12yr contract. Quit whining.

Booth and Ballard would make sense, but they were brought in by Gillis. These guys are were not inherited from the previous owners or management.
The Canucks owners have money, but I do not think they are going to be too please that their GM is asking them to bail him out by 'throwing away' millions of dollars.
A good team decision, and a good business decision are not the same thing in this instance.

Expensive buyouts represent costly mismanagement to owners. Sure they can buy him out but I don't know too many rich people that like to see their money go to people that don't work for them. Booth's contract is terrible as well and when you add Luongo, Hodgson trade, letting Grabner go for nothing, the big contract to Garrison who looks like he may have parlayed a career season into a big contract there's mounting evidence that Gillis was simply the benefactor of walking into a really good team built buy the men that preceded him. His drafting is been poor and his moves of the past few years are either so-so or downright terrible.
I can see why he's holding on to Luongo as long as he is as the man badly needs a home run as things are starting to crumble around him.

First round exit I think Gillis is on thin ice but AV will take the fall. I have always felt Gillis is the most over-rated GM in the league.

That's good news as far as I'm concerned. I haven't seen anything from him that shows he's going to be able to steer a team through tough times and lets face it the Canucks are still a good team but they are on an imminent downward trend.

If you hate the Canucks you should have wanted Luongo to leave since he's way better than Schneider.

interesting article in yesterday's Herald indicating that Louongo was dissapointed about not being traded - according to the article he just wants to play.
Does anyone know if a player could request that a contract be broken? Surely he'd easily sign somewhere if he had a more friendly deal. although it is hard to imagine walking away from all that money.

I think they will have to buy him out, or trade him for Komisarek straight up.
Then use the compliance buyouts on Booth and Komisarek, while keeping Ballard. That would save face for the GM, as he didn't give up much for Booth (compared to Ballard), and would get them barely under the cap. Vancouver oweners will still easily turn a profit with those two buyouts on the books
I can't see them re-signing Roy, but they should pick up a 3rd line center from somewhere
Daniel - Henrik - Jensen?
Raymond - Kesler - Burrows
Higgins - new center - Hansen
Weise - Lapierre - Kassian
Edler - Bieksa
Garrison - Hamhuis
Ballard - Tanev
Schneider
Lack
Assuming they spend 3-4 mil on the 3rd center, this would put them just under 65 mil for their cap. That lineup right there is pretty much equal in quality to the lineup they have right now, so I can see them getting through this relatively unscathed. I don't have much faith in Gillis' abilities though

Not reading through the CBA I'm not sure if there is such a loophole but I highly doubt it. Also you have to know that the NHLPA would totally oppose this anyway.
