Let's hope they just stay inside the box with a top 2 pick. Taking a Russian or trading down would just be horrific (especially if they traded down and then took Nichuskin).

All 5 of those players are NHL ready though

If that's the case Barkov drops in my rankings, in my mind. You wanna get the kids that can come in and play ASAP I'd think.

I am more concerned with peak potential - couldn't care less whether or not they can play next year

Given that, do you take the Russian with 2 years left on a contract in the KHL, or Barkov who will be away, not playing hockey for the same 2 years?

First of all, I would rather have MacKinnon or Jones than either of these two.

Then I think I would take Barkov, but it's a tough call. I really like Nichushkin and could never understand why he wasn't getting any talk until recently.

My dream is MacKinnon and then Nichushkin slipping to our second pick (unlikely though, of course)

I think Nich has more upside than Barkov but is riskier

I would assume no one would draft Finish prospects if they all require 2 years away from the game to do their military service.

Agreed - unless you think the Flames are going to be contenders in the next couple years and whoever their draft is going to be a big part of that, you look at long term and not short term.

Doesn't this negatively impact prospect development?? (naturally kurri/selanne were elite, but i mean why doesn't this deter more NHL teams from going for finnish prospects)?

"Finland has mandatory military service for men of a minimum duration of six months (180 days); depending on the assigned position: those trained as officers or NCOs serve for twelve months (362 days), specialist troops serve for nine (270 days) or twelve months, while rank and file serve for the minimum period. Unarmed service is also possible, and lasts nine months (270 days). The obligation to enter into service begins at the age of 19, and may be postponed to the age of 29, when it becomes either mandatory, or the conscript is exempted."

Just some info on military service in Finland, from what I gather anyway (and friend's born in Finland playing in finnish leagues who are currently ~23/24) did not have to do their service

Yes from my limited viewings definitely agree. He looks like Malkin-lite while Yakupov looks like Semin-lite.

I'd still stay away from the big Russian unless all the other top end guys are gone, and to me, that includes Lindholm and Monahan.

Russian superstars are just too moody. They can be absolutely great and dominate when they feel like it, but they flake out over the littlest things.

Plus when was a last time a Russian superstar really led a team to a Stanley Cup? The Red Wing teams with Fedorov (though the best player) were led by Yzerman and that team was stacked. As dominating as Bure was for the Canucks in 94, it was Linden and Maclean who drove that bus. I can't think of any example where a Russian was THE reason why a team won a cup.

Oops, sorry missed the big one, Malkin....nevermind....still, Malkin's a centre and I think that makes a big difference.

I agree with taht and that's why I don't want to see Nichushkin with the first pick.

However, as a second pick, yes please!

Really depends on the organization's level of trust in the Russian system and the supporting framework they provide their players to excel and plant roots. Malkin, Semin, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk have all come over and absolutely flourished in NA with no issues. That Nichushkin looks totally legit and has superstar potential.

The russian factor can be figured out in player interviews with the organization. if he says there is nothing more he wants than to be an NHL star and will glady come over right away then you have to think for about a day or so if you want him with the most important pick in Flames history arguably.
