Hanowski clearly doesn't have Oshie's college stats, so probably we're looking at TJ Oshie as the ceiling for him with the likelihood that he's not gonna end up being as good. Agostino appears to be the better prospect, so if we end up with two players, one slightly better than TJ Oshie, one slightly worse, and let's get crazy and say Nicolas Petan with that 1st round pick that's some pretty solid 2nd line/3rd line depth.

That, of course, is the absolute best-case scenario.

Regarding those college stats...you have to remember that stacked team Oshie played on his first couple of years.

Drew Stafford, Travis Zajac, Jonathan Toews, Brian Lee...an unbelievable team for a young guy to learn from.

Agostino and Hanowski sounds like a pair of highway cops on a cheesy 80's show.

Devils Advocate speaking...

Flip side of that coin is Agostino could have similar players on his team right now.

Really the only way to see how these guys will pan out is to wait & see. I'm sticking of the mindset of I'm glad they got something, and a 1st. He could have just as easily stuck around hoping the Flames would make the playoffs, and then left for nothing in the summer. At least this is something.

I like Mantha more as a late first round pick over Petan he put up 50 goals which only 3 players did out of all the CHL leagues 6'3, Great skater, High hockey IQ and high offensive ability. We don't need to grab an undersized player all the time to get high end skill.

Mantha interests me as well. He is one of the guys with top-line potential in this draft, with a decent chance he gets taken >20th. The Q has some good players coming out this year

I like Petan too though. I could see him getting picked later than Mantha, and the Flames will have seen plenty of him. The points he put this year were ridiculous

I doubt Mantha gets past 20. That offensive production is hard to pass on if you're picking between 15 and 20 ...

Beauty pass. Terrible defending.

I liked the look of these prospects when I first heard of the trade, then I convinced myself they were terrible when I heard about the Boston offer, and now I'm looking at things subjectively again. These guys could both be players within 2 or 3 years. Agostino especially.

Supposedly the goal Agostino scored in that game was very nice, but can't find any highlights of it yet.

I love Agostino on those 2 goals. He created the turnovers on both goals by outworking the opposition player. Then it was a great shot on his goal and a great pass to finish off the Golden Gophers.

Both of the guys we picked up in that trade seem like "character" guys. I can understand people being disappointed with the trade. I can't say I'm overly happy with with it, but the fact of the matter is we need more players on this team that give a 110% every shift, as opposed to what we have right now. If Agostino and Hanowski can replace what we lost in Prust, Nystrom, and Moss then I'll be a happy camper. It would be nice to feel like this team cares as much as I do for a change.

I said it in another topic, but I think this is a case of people being upset because we didn't get names they know. Looking at HF ratings while they are very flawed they give you some idea, and both of these kids are rated higher than every Flames prospect besides Sven, Jankowski, Gaudreau & Reinhart. They are rated the same as guys like Muzzin who many wanted if Iginla went to LA. Both have raised their stock since entering college.

Agostino is definitely the more skilled of the 2 and I can see the Callahan comparisons but Hanowski looks to be all character and heart which as you said is much needed. When St. Cloud is eliminated I really look forward to him joining the Heat.

I have access to a coach of an ECAC Men's Hockey team that regularly plays against Yale; I met with him and asked what he thought about Kenny Agostino as a Calgary Flames prospect.

Here are his thoughts:

"I think Agostino is going to be a player and they will probably sign him after Frozen Four. However, he will need a year or two of seasoning in AHL just to learn how to engage a little more consistently. NHL speed and skill though."
