Which begs the question why would St. Louis do that? Thats right, they wouldnt.
Come to think of it, the Calgary Flames are pretty thin on defense and I am really not sure trading a 29 year old Jay Bouwmeester would help this issue.
I know there is a rather large faction that believes that by the numbers that he is not worth what he earns and he has been underwhelming.
But he eats huge minutes at a very high level against the other teams best players and is as smoothe of a skater as they come....he would be a great asset on any team, why not have him remain an asset on ours?

I think the goal here now is to have a total change of direction in regards to having so many NTC's and over thirty players on big contracts. Thats why you move an asset like Bouwmeester.

Get the best player you can. Junior chemistry doesn't always translate to the NHL. Hnat and Jarome had great chemistry in Kamloops.

Of course. Guarantee a high draft pick and curse a rival team? No-brainer.

I think it would probably be a 10-15 pick, but there are still some good looking prospects there and who knows what you could get by packaging to move up?
I picked Paajarvi because he can already play in the league and I'm a big believer in late-blooming Swedes.

I am on the fence trading JayBo. The possible 1st and prospect is enticing, but they will likely have to overpay a UFA to fill in the minutes he would have had. How is that different from overpaying JayBo for the role he plays?

The man wilts under pressure. If we ever wish to entertain the idea that we become a good team again some day, I really see no way that it happens with Bouwmeester playing big minutes. Maybe if his role gets scaled down and he becomes a secondary guy it could work, but I would just as soon see him gone. Don't like his compete level, don't like the way he seems to accept losing.

Damn I was about to post the same thing... I think we might have to send some more back Edmonton's way, but I think they're willing to deal their first this season after picking high for so many years.
Maybe Bouwmeester, a prospect, and a veteran (one of Stajan, Stempniak, or Comeau if they're dumb enough to take him).
Obviously they have to give up more to move Bouwmeester to a division rival, so maybe that's not out of the question?
Paajarvi has looked very impressive the last couple months, and might work out well on a line with Backlund.

If we are seeing the real J Bo, I think he is worth more to us than the 'potential' return. His style of play will enable him to stay at a high level for a lot of years (if we're seeing the real jay).
Even if we landed Seth Jones, he's probably still 3-4 years away from being a dominant, consistent game controlling force. Any other prospect would probably need longer.

Id take Hartikainen before Paajarvi if we HAD to take an oiler player off the roster.

Problem with the real Jay, he hasn't been around much except at times this season. For once I'd like to see the Flames sell high and trade a fairly inconsistent player for maximum value.

No thank you at all to Smid, no interest whatsoever.
All those juicy high Oiler draft picks, please.

Eh.. not so hot on Smid, he's a decent player, but I doubt he gets better than what you see now.
Paajarvi is who I hope they go after. We missed out on Gagner when he could of been had for cheap, and I could see Paajarvi improving a lot as well under the right conditions.
I dunno how Klefbom was playing in Sweden before he got hurt, but him and first would be a solid return as well. Personally I am just hoping for something to make up for the crappy Iginla trade (like I am sure most of us are hoping for).

I think he has a very soft personality, you bring up a very good peripheral observation. It is very evident in interviews that he has an introverted nice guy personality. This is why he seems to accept losing and why his compete level tends to seem low, lets not forget he is the reigning ironman in the NHL. You know playing at this level that he has probably played hurt more than we know. Thats not a sign of low compete level.
However your opinion and observation is good and most certainly still stands. Jay Bowumeesters type of personality needs to have someone to gravitate towards and motivate / inspire them. You put him alongside a leadership personality like Mark Messier and watch him perform like you never seen him play.
Calgary as a whole is too soft and that I agree, they need some real hard nose leaders to inspire the good players on our team that well need inspiring.
Unfortunately we just traded our greatest leader away!...which of course we had to and I wish him the best of luck in his quest for the cup.

Smid is actually pretty good, and he stands up for teammates. I'd welcome here with open arms as long as he's a throw-in.

Smid is neither a prospect nor a draft pick. Stick to the plan Feaster! You do have a plan right?

Yup if you can get rid of that contract let him be someone else's problem... Get us some more assets, him and his contract aren't needed here... I'm thinking Detroit... Nyquist and a 2nd maybe, plus he will be back in the east next year...
