So what is the logic for those of you who do not believe Jankowski was the player the Flames wanted the entire time and made a smart move to get a 2nd for free?

Do you think that the Flames had a bunch of Jersey's stitched up with different names and had them all ready for whenever they would finally pick in the first round?

Why would the Flames go through that level of elaborate effort just to say "We got the player we wanted!"? They didn't bother doing that in any of the previous drafts.

I guess I would be interested to see whether or not the Flames stitch a namebar onto the jersey at the 2013 draft.

Why not pull a Burke and get Drouin & McKinnon.

For arguments sake lets say the picks end up being:

1st - Florida
2nd - Colorado
3rd - Calgary
4th - Tampa

Move 1 - Send Gio or JayBo + 1st 2014 to TB for 4th Overall 2013

Move 2 - Send 4th Overall + 3rd Round pick 2013 + 4th Round pick 2014 to Colorado for 2nd overall

Then the draft looks like:

1st- Florida
2nd - Calgary
3rd - Calgary
4th - Colorado

One could dream right?

The Flames could theoretically pull off 2 top 5 picks.. they do have the assets to move out that would round up multiple first round picks. They just need a dancing partner in the top 5.. I am thinking Colorado given their strong organizational depth at forward already.. or like I said before, Edmonton. If they can't get Jones, do they really need another high profile forward?

I like the idea but I think the new draft lottery system will make it a lot harder to make this work. Even if the standings end up being exactly as listed above at the end of the season, there would still be about a 40% chance that one of the 4th-14th place teams would win the lottery, take the 1st overall pick and bump the Flames down a spot.

At that point the Flames would need to somehow not just get the #2 overall pick but they would also need to upgrade their #4 back to the #3 in order to get both of Drouin and MacKinnon. Or they could gamble and hope that they can get those players with the 2&4 picks instead of 2&3.

not overally...

trade bou/1st 2014 for 3rd Overall

trade 4th overall/3rd 2013/3rd2014 for 1st Overall

trade 1st for 2nd overall/3rd 2013

Now we have 2nd/3rd Overall + a 3rd 2013 back (you could do without this if u wanted and just did move #2 for the 2nd overall)

As long as calgary finishes witha top 4 pick I believe that it could be done. Now that doesn't take into account if the other teams would do it or not, but based on some the teams in the bottom it may work. It would be even better if Philly finished with the 4th Overall pick. Makes a Bou/1st for 1st overall package a strong possibility.

We would have a better shot at Drouin if we traded Sven + an additional first (Iggy trade) to get the #2/3 pick and maybe a 3rd rounder?

Correctamundo! Feaster mentioned in one of the post draft interviews that they were so high on Patrick Seiloff (42nd) that they would have been just as happy with him as their first rounder but Jay also said they had targeted Matt Finn who was taken by Toronto seven spots ahead. (35th)

Sure would be fun to know who Calgary had targeted before trading the 14th pick.
  1. Nail Yakupov - Oilers
  2. Ryan Murray - Blue Jackets
  3. Alex Galchenyuk - Canadiens
  4. Griffin Reinhart - Islanders
  5. Morgan Rielly - Maple Leafs
  6. Hampus Lindholm - Ducks
  7. Mathew Dumba - Wild
  8. Derrick Pouliot - Penguins
  9. Jacob Trouba - Jets
  10. Slater Koekkoek - Lightning
  11. Filip Forsberg - Capitals
  12. Mikhail Grigorenko - Sabres
  13. Radek Faksa - Stars

Is Barkov's skating like Joe Thornton bad? Barkov is definitely the guy I want to see the Flames pick, putting up big numbers in a league against previous 1st round picks and former NHLer's/professional players, big with great vision.

Barkov's speed is average to slightly above average for an NHLer. He's not going to be a speed demon, Looking at the Flames though, is that really a huge issue?

Barkov kind of reminds me of Niedereitter from a few years ago.

He is technically sound. He just isn't that fast. He could very well get faster with more work on leg strength I don't know. It isnt that big a deal though cause he protects the puck really well. Only reason I brought it up was cause it is something mentioned by some scouts. I think he is about as fast as Thornton though.

How so? I see no similarities to their game.

I have not seen the kid outside of WJC and internet clips, but he is definitely the guy I want to see the Flames pick:

Size - Check
Skill - Check
One of the youngest players in the draft - check
Hockey IQ - check

The Flames already have two smallish skilled wingers who will play in the NHL in a top six role in my opinion (Gaudreau and Sven). I really like the idea of getting a big hulking center to play with one of those two.

If Nichushken drops enough (assuming the Flames get some 1st round picks at the deadline) I would love to see the Flames try to get him as well. The fact that he is over in the KHL for the next two years does not bother me at all given where I think the Flames will finish over the next two years. Having him as a 21, 22 and 23 year old on his ELC is very intriguing to me.
