Well I guess that means Selanne won't be back next year.

The Ducks had to sign him, but I see this as good news for the Flames and the rest of the division. $17M (almost) for 2 players is a lot, and keeping them motivated every year will be a challenge.
This is just a few hundred K less than what Crosby and Malkin cost... these guys are good, but they aren't Crosby and Malkin good

Can't really compare as those guys signed their deals years ago when the cap was much less.

Crosby just re-signed in the summer (when the cap was higher)

Crosby re-upped last summer I thought. And Malkin the year before, Pretty sure the cap was higher in both years

Great news for the PA fund or whatever he has to donate to when he gets suspended. I wouldn't be surprised if he 'donates' more than $10 million in suspension money.

Man, neither guy really took a discount of any kind. The Ducks players are gonna have to start buying their own stick tape and Gatorade next season.

For what? There's literally not another team in the league that would be offering Perry 69M, it would require a 10M cap hit.
Murray was in the driver seat, if he really wanted Perry he could throw this type of money at him and keep him. Now it's about keeping the team competitive with these 2 players making that much, something we wont really know he's capable of doing until several years from now.

this puts the Ducks around $54M with 16 current NHLers signed next year. Assuming Selanne and Koivu retire, they don't really have any other big ticket players left to sign, and lots of good young talent ready to step up (Holland, Palmieri, Etem, McMillan, Smith-Pelley)
Looks like a team being built the right way

How good is your scouting, drafting, and development to be able to pick two guys like that at 19th and 28th overall?
I wish the Flames could do that this year. Pick up two franchise cornerstones without a top 5 pick, cause god knows we aren't getting one.

It's still funny that Kevin Lowe went public with his demand that Comrie pay the Oilers 2.5 million so he could trade him to Anaheim for Perry and a first round pick....because Anaheim wasn't offering enough.

You are crazy if you think that another team wouldn't have offered that kind of money for a former Hart trophy winner in his prime. Heck the Flames offered Richards almost as much money and he's nowhere near the player Perry is. I have zero doubt that if Perry went to UFA he gets this deal or better from at least two or three teams.

That type of money and that type of cap hit. The Flames were never close to giving Brad Richards a contract with a 10M cap hit. heck, his cap hit is only 6.6M.
You're calling me crazy because I don't think a team would be willing to give Perry a 7 year contract worth 70M ? That's the only way he was guaranteed to make more money. I don't see it, not even a terribly run team would think Perry was worth more than 15% of their cap.

The insanity continues! It's looking more and more like the lockout was a waste of time. A bunch of other owners in league are probably cursing Ducks management for the 2 ridiculous contracts they just gave out. The going rate for a top line player just went to over $8 mill.

I would say that the franchaise players were underpaid compared to the rest of the league under the last CBA.
Borderline guys like Souray, Wideman, Cammalleri, Horcoffs were almost making the same as Thorntons and Iginlas.
I have no problem with the true stars getting paid big bucks if it squeezes the second tier guys down into reasonable salaries.

It sucks that this guy is now going to be in our division for likely the next 8 seasons. I think he might become the most hated player on this board soon enough.
