I honestly do not know how Tod Button has survived this many GM's.
Hired in the summer of 1997 by Al Coates, which is closing in on 17 seasons. Head of amateur scouting since 2001.
I wish "cleaning house" meant getting rid of all the old guard. I don't know if he's a problem or not, but the Flames really need to look at turfing this guy as well as moving roster players.
He hasn't been a part of the solution since his arrival, and I'm damn sure he didn't find Kiprusoff.

First time I have ever been more focused on playing a video game than watching the game. I guess DayZ is just more worth playing than watching those #######s skate around out there.

Here's my (possibly drunken) thoughts for the night:
Brodie: I have to admit I never thought of him as more than a 3/4 PP specialist, but he really impressed me tonight. I always thought his upside was a Wideman with maybe a bit more defensive acumen. I was fully expecting a Butler type performance, but Brodie looked very composed, made several good defensive and offensive plays out there. I may need to upgrade my expectations with him.
Backlund: The only Flame to score a goal, and it was a pretty frickin nifty goal. Those are the kind of goals that give me hope with Backs. He's a fairly responsible player, drives play into the offensive zone and always seems to pick up his man in the defensive zone. There's a lot of life still in this draft pick, and I hope that at some point in the near future he and Baertschi can re-ignite their chemistry.
Giordano: "Jordano" looked a lot more comfortable on the second pairing. I know this is straying away from being positive, but we might have to accept that Gio isn't anything more than a pretty good 2nd pairing d-man. I don't know if it's the extra minutes, the extra pressure of being on the top pairing, or his injury last season, but he just doesn't have it this year. Honestly, a lot of people harp on his lack of offensive production as a sign of his decline, but to me it's that he's not taking the body, blocking shots, and making quick, smart decisions with the puck like he used to. If Gio (yeah, I said it), could get back to that I would be more than happy. The offensive production is more of a bonus to me.
The negative (other) part:
Slava Voynov: That kid is going to be a hell of a defenseman. He is what I would hope any of our prospects turn out to be. You forget the kid is only 23. He looks so composed out there in any zone. That's what good hockey IQ is. When you can read the plays like he does you're always in the right position, whether on offense or defense. I expect him to be in the Norris conversation in the near future.
Calgary (in general): Just too small, too weak on the puck. LA didn't even have to take the body more than a few times. Just getting sticks in the lane ( on very predictable passing patterns) was enough. I think the score was very flattering to the Flames. Once the Kings got two goals they locked down on us. Even on the powerplay LA embarrassed us. I'm still not sure how we have such a high ranking powerplay. I haven't felt that it's "threatening" for a while now.
Anyways, that's my (drunken) thoughts for the night. Hopefully we're selling at the deadline, because this team just doesn't have it.

This is hardly the team that Feaster built. This is the team Sutter built. Feasters done little more than deal in fringe players. Not his fault. That core is locked down

The players on this team has no composure, they get scared and always ring the puck around the boards whether its in the offensive or defensive zone. They scramble too much and thats why in the defensive zone it becomes a firedrill everytime the other team is in our zone. When people talk about size, I have to disagree based.
Calgary is not too small, maybe too weak and too stupid.
Here are some of the stats from other teams:
Calgary - Last in the west | average size is 72.8 inches and 195.5 lbs
Montreal - First in the east | average size is 72.1 inches and 197.3 lbs
Minnie - First in the NW | average size is 72.7 inches and 199.7 lbs
Boston - 4th in the east | average size is 72.9 inches and 200 lbs
Looking back, Hartley might not be the best guy. He gets scrambled and mashes up lines. I honestly don't like his player management. MacDonald played well last night but he should of played on the back2back and Kipper should of played last night.

Completely agree. They play in a perpetual state of panic like the puck is a hot potato.
This has been the case for at least a couple years now. I think Sutter's 'don't make a mistake' philosophy had a lot to do with it, but at the end of the day, it is on the players.

Agreed, the 4 thoughts I had last night were: Brodie looks GOOD on that top pairing, Gio is def an awesome 2nd pairing D but definately not a 1st pairing D, and damn what a goal by Backlund. Backlund is going to be the real deal, not some tweener 2nd line player. I still think he's got 70-80 pt potential. Sven/JohnnyG might be our top 2 prospects, but Backlund is no slouch and he's a very close 3rd. (Slick pass by Tanguay as well)
And Voynov is a gem... I knew his offense game was great, but his defense positioning/sense/reaction was world class. He's going to be a top 5 defenseman in the NHL.

Except Roy was mad about being left out to dry by his coach and teammates and Kipper is laughing about a puck coming into the bench.

I didn't see the actual event, so there may be more to it, but on the highlight I saw on TSN, he didn't look like he was laughing about it. It looked to me like he was saying, "Hey coach, holding this stupid ass clipboard is going to get me hit in the head by a flying puck one of these days".
Couple that with Maher confirming he was very unhappy with not starting last night, and yeah.... I don't think he was laughing. But, I could totally be wrong.

When I saw it during the game he didn't seemed pissed at all and was interacting with a guy on the bench but I didn't do much analysis on it or hear any comments after the game so I could have read it wrong.

What exactly is Hartley asking the goalies to do with the clipboard? What kind of data are they recording?

Nice averages - but this also includes:
McGrattan - 6'4
Sarich - 6'3
Babchuk - 6'5
Jackman - 6'2
Size has to play in order to be effective. It is nice for the averages when guys this tall sit on the sidelines every single game, or play extremely limited minutes. Our top 9 is probably the smallest in the league and I would wager that our "size per minute" average (can anyone spend time computing this? lol) is also at the bottom of the league.
