BC lost 4-2 to UMass but Arnold got both goals. Bitter sweet.

That was Tuesday night's game.

Providence and BC are playing their second game of their home and home weekend right now in Boston.

Providence leads 1-0 early in the second. Shots were 7-7 in the first.

Personally, next season I'd like to see Taylor as starter with Brossoit getting 25 or so games as the Bear's backup. It's not smart to throw a rookie goalie at the wolves in the AHL.

I wonder if Ortio comes back next season or if he continues to hone his skills in Finland?

Goal will surely be an interesting position for both the Flames and the Heat next season.

Will Kiprussoff be here in Calgary?

Will Ramo come in and take over the #1?

Will the Flames re-sign some 'insurance' in Macdonald who is a 'decent' backup?

Brossoit will turn pro next season - assumption is he will be on the Heat (unless he really impresses in Flames' camp! - who knows, but a very long shot for sure)

What about Ortio? Does he come over to North America again, or remain in Finland? If he does, that Heat net starts getting crowded again quick.

Lots of things need to shake out. I wonder where Taylor fits afterwards. I agree that you shouldn't throw a rookie to the wolves (in any league really - though Gillies is definitely proving that rule wrong this season), but what will happen with Brossoit and Ortio if they are both here? One goes to the ECHL?

I kind of hope that Ortio stays in Finland. Let him develop there (I hear he has an excellent goalie coach there, and plays for a sub-par team and sees a lot of pucks because of it). I am actually really high on Ortio. Maybe it is just a good idea to spread out the goalie prospects around.

Regardless, I think Taylor seems like a solid goalie to help a rookie crack the league under. I just wonder how everything shakes down, and if Taylor decides he may get a better opportunity in another organization that is a bit more bare of prospects? I am sure he is very grateful for the NHL 2-way, but he has his own career to look out for, and there must be a team somewhere that doesn't have as many goalie prospects.

I would, however, still want to see Taylor in another game or two at the NHL level. First game was a lot of nerves. I do think Taylor would make a good backup at the NHL level one day.

My guess on the goalie situation next year:

Calgary

Kiprusoff
Ramo

Ideally Kipper is there to be the starter, but Ramo hopefully is able to start a lot more games than any Flames back up in a long time.....like upwards of 30-40% if he plays well enough.

Abbotsford

Taylor
Brossoit

Very similar situation to Calgary hopefully, with the more experienced Taylor as the starter, but Brossoit playing more and more as the year progresses if he plays well, and looking to take over as full time starter the following year.

Others

Ortio - Finland
Gillies - NCAA

Gone

Irving
Brust
MacDonald

Not sure if anyone cares, or even if it has been mentioned, but The Hockey News ranks the Flames 27th amongst NHL teams with regards to prospects and a C+ rating. The top ten prospects are as follows:

1) Sven, 2) Johnny G., 3) Janko, 4) Chris Breen, 5) Sieloff, 6) Wotherspoon, 7)Granlund, 8) Brossoit, 9) Gillies, 10) Reinhart.

Randy Sportak of the Sun did the write-up. He writes that where the Flames have drafted it's been hard to get top-end talent, but is "starting to amass a prospect pool". He goes on to say that it will still be a slow process because of Darryl trading away picks, unless some surprises come forward in a hurry.[/B]

Wouldn't that be nice (the bolded part)! Seems like other teams have their surprises, but not us.

Thanks for sharing. That's an interesting rating. I like Breen but I would probably have him a few spots lower and Gillies and Reinhart a bit higher. Reinhart is playing at a higher level and his production/role has changed but his skills and potential are still worthy of a top 6 ranking among the prospects IMO.

Arnold seems to be very underrated - I wonder if he just missed out on the top 10? He could potentially be one of the surprises you mentioned.

I thought Arnold would be up there also. I think-at least I'd like to think-that the Flames prospect pool has improved regardless of what Hockey Futures, The Hockey News or any other publication writes. The proof will be in the pudding, of course, but really, what does any publication really know?

Just to let you know, the way The Hockey News does it is they ask each teams scout to give their top 10 list, and then they create their overall list from what the teams give. So I'm pretty sure this is the way the Flames have their prospects ranked.

I'd have Irving and Ortio in Abbotsford with Brossoit in the ECHL. There is no shame in having a rookie goalie playing in the ECHL and I'd like to see more of Irving and Ortio, it's too early to give up on goalie prospects. Irving should be given a chance to compete for the Flames backup, he just has too quiet his nerves some. We don't even know if Kipper will be back for sure.

I can't see Brossoit starting out in the ECHL.

I don't think many teams, if any, start their top goalie prospects in that league. That's usually where you go if you start in the AHL and can't hack it.

I think Irving is done with the Flames organization. I don't think he's thought very highly of by our management, and vice versa. If he is done here, it will be interesting to see if he lands on his feet somewhere.

This was #2 on the ESPN Sportscenter Top 10 tonight...

Gillies was the first star in the game. Janko had an assist.

Actually agree with Vulcan here. As an example I believe Nathan Lieuwen started the year in the ECHL after a phenomenal WHL career.

I don't think the ECHL would be my top choice to have him play in, but if it means he's perhaps a third man in a three goalie team, then yeah, ECHL it is. But my prediction still stands - Taylor as starter with Brossoit as backup.

Snip.
Can't disagree with having Breen as the fourth best prospect in the system. No joke guys, he's taken a massive step forward this year and is ready for the NHL in a #5-6 D role. I'd put money on Breen being a full-time NHLer next season. He would he this season if it weren't for having four #5-6 defensemen (Sarich, Smith, Butler, Babchuk).

Also on that list, I'd probably switch Wotherspoon and Sieloff.

I don't think Danny Taylor will return to Abbotsford next season. I think he has shown he deserves a two-way contract as a teams #3 goaltender. I just don't see Calgary wanting to have 4 goalies under contract next year.

Now don't get me wrong, if Taylor is willing to accept an AHL contract I would welcome him back with open arms, but unfortunately I just don't see that happening.

I agree. There really is no point in having Taylor or Brust with the Heat next year. Its time for the Flames to start to put their eggs in their own prospects basket. Resign Irving for 1 year and have Brossoit and Irving and your goalies. Time to ride your own assets, for better or for worse.

Abbotsford:
Ortio
Brossoit
