Terrible news for Backlund. Hopefully he doesn't come back playing catch up like last year.
For some unexplained reason I'm not worried about Kipper.
Silver lining is when Sven comes back the injuries open up more minutes for him.
I think Sven makes this team better if he gets at least 10mins a night.

We can live with Kipper being out two more games. But with our center depth being touchy to begin with, not having a productive Backlund sets this team back far worse.

This is starting to remind me of last season.....every game another guy would go down, and lots of them long term.

I'm really disappointed that Backlund's injury is much worse than first thought. That being said I also don't think this will derail his development.
Sure Backlund had a strong camp last year and then broke his finger and never really recovered. But how things have been going this season, when he starts playing again he may be a bit behind, but I don't think he's going to regress to what we saw last year.
He obviously gained confidence over the lockout in Sweden and was showing some strong promise in the games he played under a far more offensive system. Once that's gained it's hard to lose that and I think last year had more to do with the style of injury (to his hands) and the blow to his confidence. I think Backlund will be back and will continue his pace, I doubt we'll see the Backlund of old when he gets back.

Terrible news. Feel really bad for him, he's been my favourite Flames story this year outside of Hulder/Cervenka combo. Really hope he doesn't lose all that mojo he brought back from Europe.
Only 8 games in and already Kipper, Cammy, Backlund, Sven down...yes hockey gods, its a tough game, we get it. Enough already

Does anyone think Backlund and Sven are Bandaids? They seem to get injured alot! I hate to say it, but I think Backlund is a guy that is going to be out with injuries.

Just saw on TSN that Kiprusoff has a grade I MCL injury while Backlund has a grade II MCL injury.
Here's some info
Quote:
Symptoms of a MCL injury tend to correlate with the extent of the injury. MCL injuries are usually graded on a scale of I to III.
- Grade I MCL Tear
This is an incomplete tear of the MCL. The tendon is still in continuity, and the symptoms are usually minimal. Patients usually complain of pain with pressure on the MCL, and may be able to return to their sport very quickly. Most athletes miss 1-2 weeks of play.
- Grade II MCL Tear
Grade II injuries are also considered incomplete tears of the MCL. These patients may complain of instability when attempting to cut or pivot. The pain and swelling is more significant, and usually a period of 3-4 weeks of rest is necessary.
- Grade III MCL Tear
A grade III injury is a complete tear of the MCL. Patients have significant pain and swelling, and often have difficulty bending the knee. Instability, or giving out, is a common finding with grade III MCL tears. A knee brace or a knee immobilizer is usually needed for comfort, and healing may take 6 weeks or longer.

Some good news:
Vicki Hall @vickihallch
Sven Baertschi was expected to be back skating today as he recovers from hip flexor

Sounds like they are optimistic cammy will play on Monday. On the fan, Feaster said he's doubtful for tomorrow, but they think he will be back Monday.

Honestly, at the moment I'm not worried about Kipper coming back. Of course that will change if Irving starts losing us games, but I want to see what Irving has at this level and with a healthy Kipper he wasn't going to get my significant playing time.

He is practicing with a yellow jersey ( non contact). Probably not long now.

This season is really ticking me off. It's bad enough we have the same inconsistent play, and crappy record with slim (to none) playoff chances, but the topper is having Baertschi, Backlund and Bouma all out.....and then Byron getting hurt two minutes into his first game after being called up.
F sakes anyways.

That part has sucked. Thing is with Sven, was there any room for him in the top 9 if healthy? There is no chance they would pressbox Cammi, Iggy, Tangs or Glencross ( even though they should ). Hudler and Stempniak have been 2 of the better winger this short start to the season. I guess they could play him on the 4th line and give hime some extra playing time in games where players are not skating.

I think that by now Sven would have eked out some more ice time, especially with all the line juggling they've been doing. Maybe not, but either way it would make the season a tad bit more bearable if he were at least playing.

There were some updates earlier in the week. He practiced with the team before they left for Minnesota and Hartley says he is making good progress or something along those lines. A return next week seems realistic.
