So once again, I don't see the benefit for O'Reilly to hold out for nothing less than $6.5M, an amount we all know he won't get. It'll just hurt his reputation with GMs even more.

If the qualifying offer means nothing like you think it does then there is no reason for the AVs to not match the offer sheet and just trade him in a year for a more certain return.

Fans have wanted a highly skilled center on this team for the last decade, we finally have a chance to get one and people don't like the move? I admit, the one part of this I'm not really a fan of is the dollar amount next year. Giving up a first round pick that likely won't be a top 3 or even 5, and a third for a good young player who addresses a need and already has some proven individual success in the league seems like a legit risk you have to take.

Dan Tencer, 630CHED: Man. Flames play Avalanche tonight in Denver and they sign O’Reilly to an offer sheet on their way in. Ballsy move by Feaster. Good for him….The biggest thing here is that the Avalanche can’t trade O’Reilly if they sign him, and many believe that relationship is irreparably broken….I like the aggression from Feaster. Flames ownership won’t let him burn it down, so might as well just grab your guns and get aggressive…And, if you’re a Flames fan, it’s worth recognizing Feaster’s absolutely brutal draft history. Picks simply worth less with him in charge.
James Mirtle, Globe & Mail: About time a team gave O’Reilly an offer sheet. Makes no sense this doesn’t happen more often….Based on points percentage, Flames would have the ninth overall pick right now. Bigger problem is if they fall in standings….But O’Reilly is worth quite a bit more than a ninth overall pick. Can Avs move past the animosity that’s been created?
Pierre LeBrun, ESPN: Says a rival Western Conference team exec: “Avs will match for sure.” Well, we shall see …
Jesse Spector, The Sporting News: If I’m Greg Sherman, I say “thanks for the lottery pick and for screwing yourself more on the cap, Feaster!” and move on with my life….Maybe the smartest part of Feaster’s plan is avoiding ridicule for whatever he might have done with the first-round pick.
Bruce Arthur, National Post: It’s amazing the NHL doesn’t encourage more things like offer sheets to create player movement. Manufactures hot-stove debate and interest.
Hockey agent Allan Walsh: And of course, the offer sheet is somehow the greedy players fault, something players should be penalized for in the next CBA negotiation….Calgary’s owner was one of the primary advocates of a hardline against the players. Another “I just couldn’t control myself” moment?
Steve Simmons, Toronto Sun: Kudos to Flames GM Jay Feaster by signing Ryan OReilly to an offer sheet. At least he’s trying to make his team better.
Greg Wyshynski, Puck Daddy blogger: Let me get this right: Draft Pick X is better than retraining your leading scorer or getting known commodity?
Erik Erlendsson, Tampa Bay Tribute: The Flames want to pay Ryan O’Reilly $6.5 million in 2013-14? … That sort of contract makes agents around the league smile as it drives up price for comparables; nice to see the lockout already forgotten.

Good enough reason to cheer for the Avs to walk.

so it's a great deal because our GM is so bad at drafting players that the picks would be likely useless anyways. awesome

They have exactly seven days from when the Offer Sheet was filed with the League. So, that's next Thursday afternoon.

Seriously...

Ashasx is right, he is not guarnated $6.5 million at the end of this contract. The flames can walk away and pay him nothing. No one is going to give him $6.5 million. If he likes Calgary then he will re-sign. If he hates it then he leaves.

If the Avs are making this decision purely on hockey, there is no bloody way they don't match the offer sheet. However there are a couple of non-hockey factors that give us hope:
- It is possible that the relationship between O'Reilly and the Avs has soured to the point that they would rather gamble on the picks than see him come back
- I remember that the Avalanche were having some cashflow problems a couple of years back. If there are still financial concerns, they may not want to risk setting a precedent at $6.5M when they have other young players to re-sign
There's also the hope that they've bought into the belief around the league (and hockey media) that the Flames are a bottom five team....I give it a 30% chance they don't match the offer.

Apparently you guys don't know what a qualifying offer is.
ROR is not guaranteed $6.5M by anyone. If the Flames are unable to sign him and don't qualify him, he comes a UFA, where he is not guaranteed a single thing.
I'm trying to look at this from ROR's point of view. If he demands $6.5M and the Flames don't qualify him, how highly do you think other teams will think of him? He's not going to get $6.5M as a UFA either, so what benefit is ROR gaining from doing this to the Flames?
Is he twirling his mustache in malevolent anticipation?

Maybe but if they do match, they don't want to waste any time and get him in the lineup. If they aren't going to match they will definitely wait until the last minute. Gotta think the longer we don't hear anything, the better chances are they won't match.

No Ashasx is saying then he is a hold out. I clearly said if he does not accept his QO, he is a UFA.

There is not a GM in the world who is going to care if a 24 year old center is a UFA and is a productive player, not one.

Yeah, when they make the decision will tell you what they plan to do. If they want to keep him, they announce it within 24 hours. If they go more than that, they're waiting the full week to let him walk.

A hypothetical where he's not qualified can essentially be dismissed out of hand. It's not going to happen.
It's pretty obvious that the money he's owed for his 2014 qualifying offer will influence his asking price because of the leverage it gives him. I don't know why you can't wrap your head around that. It's exactly why Feaster structured the contract as he did and why Colorado will think long and hard about whether to match or not.

Based on what? In Olympic years the trade deadline is always in March because the season gets pushed back.

How does it make ANY sense that a 23 year old with a career high 18 goals should be paid 6.5 million dollars in a sport with a salary cap? Never mind the fact that Feaster is throwing out his 1st and 3rd round picks this year in a deep draft where we could be drafting high.
Not only that, but GM's don't like other GM's firing offer sheets at them poaching their players. You can bet Feaster and the Flames will suffer in the future because of this.
I also like how Matt Stajan also came into the league with seasons of 27 pts, 27 pts and then a career high of 55 points (although it was in his 5th year) just like O'Reilly.
People do understand when you sign a guy for 6.5 million that you have less money to spend on the rest of the team right? People are acting like the 6.5 is a fine price tag for a player with O'Reilly's status.
I guess time will tell what kind of player Ryan O'Reilly really is, but I have no doubt in my mind that the Avs aren't going to match, they'll take our draft picks and run, washing their hands of this whole O'Reilly mess.
