That would be extremely awkward. If I were a GM and a player asked me not to match, I would absolutely match and tell the guy to sit at home for the duration of the contract. PA wouldn't like that much.

My god man, ROR is guaranteed an offer of that amount from the Flames if they want to retain his rights. As an RFA he can expect that, with the sole exception being if the Flames use their one time arbitration rights as against him, in which case he is guaranteed around 5.5 million with the potentially of much more.

I think the Avs will wait until the last hour of the 7 days to make their decision. If we drop a couple games, it may affect their decision.
Perhaps we should call up Irving to start.

Yes, but in most RFA scenarios if the team refuses to buck up the cash they still hold the player's rights. That's not the case with qualifying offers. If O'Reilly isn't offered the required amount in 2014 the team will lose his rights for nothing.

Here you go
As you can see, it's a disgustingly talented list that any Flames fan would kill to see a Calgary player on. 25 players since 2000 have done it.

sure, you'd like to, but your owner would be asking why there is 6.5 million dollars sitting at home getting fat on his dime.

For what it's worth, Darren Dreger thinks there is no way the Avs will match.

My reaction to the offer sheet...
I have no idea how it will work out, and without a functioning crystal ball or time machine, nobody else does either. But it is interesting.

How is what I said incorrect?
In order for the Flames to qualify him, yes, it must be $6.5M. But you act like the Flames MUST qualify him. If the Flames don't qualify him, then he's guaranteed nothing.
So once again, I don't see the benefit for O'Reilly to hold out for nothing less than $6.5M, an amount we all know he won't get. It'll just hurt his reputation with GMs even more.

How can you say that? How can you say it's impossible for him to sign for less?
Do you really think ROR would reject a $30/5 year deal this off-season just so he can become a UFA in 2014?
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT FOR ROR TO HOLD OUT?
Nice to see you're still a terrible poster.

How many times does do you have to be told what a Qualifying Offer is, before you understand Ashasx?
Seriously...

You sure about that? I would think they make their decision a little quicker based on the fact that they would want to get him in the line up faster.

So that would leave us with a 4th and 6th round pick this year?
I've never felt so frustrated as a Flames fan in my life. I'm so jealous watching these teams with young, homegrown, dynamic players putting in effort, and entertaining the fans night after night. I know I'm doing a bit of right now, but I'm feeling super p'd right now.
|
exactly. look at the Stanley Cup champions for the past decade, they're all stocked full of their own draft picks and homegrown talent. look at the Flames roster in comparison, they have a total of 4 players that were drafted by Calgary (and one of those is Begin). when you look at the moves first made by Sutter and now by Feaster, it's quite obvious that this franchise doesn't respect the draft at all and/or are so bad at scouting talent that they'd rather throw picks away in favor of desperately trying to win now instead of planning for the future.
the Flames will never get a sniff of success until the whole mentality changes in that franchise, and they hire a GM who is capable of finding quality talent via the draft (and not just in the 1st round)

I'm going to assume that obviously ROR has a bad attitude for playing for the Avs, and clearly a good attitude about playing in Calgary. I don't think that the Avs brass would want someone that doesn't want to play hockey there, playing there.

I am not sure of anything, I just know there is no rational reason beyond long term security for him to sign an extension. An any extension realistically should be for a lot more than 3 or 4 years, as he is in his worst case scenario guaranteed 5.5 million a year over the next two years after the expiration of this contract, so a 3 year 5 million dollar extension makes little to no sense.
