They jsut added a guy who turned 22 a few weeks ago. Adding a player that young whose already produced is a rebuilding piece.

So that would leave us with a 4th and 6th round pick this year?

I've never felt so frustrated as a Flames fan in my life. I'm so jealous watching these teams with young, homegrown, dynamic players putting in effort, and entertaining the fans night after night. I know I'm doing a bit of right now, but I'm feeling super p'd right now.
A 22 year old putting up 50 points is different than a 28 year old putting up 50 points. The 22 year old is figuring out the game more and more every year he plays, and he's only getting better. You don't become a 50 point player in the NHL at 22 and peak. Putting up 50 points at 22 and winning face offs means you're dealing with a number one centre.

Three years from now, when our centres are RoR, Janko, Backlund and Horak, we will be in the best shape we've been in 25 years.

Personally, I don't see why anyone should a big fat load of brown bananas if the Avs are PO'ed.

They've failed to come to terms with the kid for over a month now, and all of last summer as well.

Too bad if they don't like it. Quit being so godamn cheap, and sign the kid if you don't want him offersheeted.

We should start a poll:

Will the avalanche match the Flames' offer sheet for O'Reilly?

Yes, the cap is $5. But unless you have an extension in your back pocket already, contract #3 is $6.5+ per season. That's a lot of pesos.

Worth it if he turns into that Selke winning, 60+ point player. Big, big gamble though.

wow........

the trials & tribulations of a flames fan. Excited, frustrated, confused, all at the same time.

i think the avs will look at the draft pick coming (likely a 7th or better pick) and decide to walk away.

I think ROR is going to be a flame in 7 days. Whether that's the best scenario will be known 3 years from now, when the pick is a NHL'er...

He was reported to want $5 mil/year.

Avs were reportedly offering him 2 yrs $3.5 mil/yr and around $4mil/yr on a deal that would take a year into UFA.

Amazing. This team has officially become the Kevin Lowe era Oilers. Desperate to cling to mediocrity. Do the Flames have any kind of long term plan for this franchise, other than over react to every obstacle in their way? Feaster should try and sign Penner and Vanek to make his desperation even clearer for all to see.

Reactionary move and a short sighted one as well. Fits the direction this team has had.

It gets harder and harder to be a Flames fan with every move Feaster makes.

I'd be surprised if the Flames don't try and get an extension signed before next season. Give him the rest of this year to prove he's worth the long-term deal.

That was two firsts and a second, not one first and a third

Plus the odds of the Flames pick being #2 is VERY LOW. The likelyhood of it being #9 (Dougie Hamilton) is much more likely. The third round pick is whatever, easy to get back

Ive supported Feaster up to now but this is ridiculous

If the Avs gm doesnt accept this he may be more handicapped then feaster himself

He lead the league in take-aways last season while putting up 50 points as a 21 year old.

Doesn't really matter what you are or are not sold on. He *is* one of the top young defensive centres in the league.

It's black and white: if we land O'Reilly and the pick to do so doesn't end up being a top 3-5 pick it's a landslide win that makes this team a lot better now, and moving forward.

You were trying to insinuate this is a move aimed at now without regard for the future and that couldn't be more wrong.

We have one of the weakest collection of centres in the league. Adding a proven 22 year old one makes us better now - and - in the future.

Is that worth a First, Third and the Money (lots of people seem to be forgetting about the $$$)?
He's also 22 years old. Nothing is written in stone for a player that age. That said, not a fan of the dough or givin up the picks, but that's the nature of offer sheets. I also think those picks can be recouped with trades of Kipper and/or Iggy. I do think Kipper is traded either at the deadline or at the draft.

I was honestly hoping something along these lines would happen.

Calgary is managing to win some games with a backup, a backup that isn't Kipper. That's kind of amazing when you factor in that we have one, count it one NHL calibre centre on the roster. How the ruddy hell do you do that? Add in a Ryan O'Reilly and a healthy, not to mention hopefully back to business Miikka Kiprusoff and what do you get? A team that just got younger up front, more competetive and skilled.

That doesn't sound like a team picking top 5 this year.

Yes. Though Holmgren has a much more established rapport with other GM's than Feaster to say nothing of the several very attractive assets the Flyers have.
